| Like many artistic children, I would told not to be an artist because it wouldn't ever make any money. So instead of being an artist I decided - like a proper Pollyanna - to be a writer instead. Apparently it's more respectable to be a starving writer than a starving artist. In any event, I've done a lot of jobs since then, some more successful than others. Eventually I found that my ability to do many of these jobs diminished as I developed a chronic auto-immune illness. I kept trying to work, and kept finding I'd get too ill to be unable to continue. The good thing about this (if there can be a good thing with being ill all the time) is I found I was now living on my own time, not someone else's. This gave me a new perspective on life: rather than living to work, I could work to live, and I could do something I enjoyed rather than something I merely tolerated.
