Technical Help in Creating / Best Lye?
« on: June 13, 2015, 05:34:16 PM »
Hey everyone! My husband and I are finally getting into soap making (cut wood pieces for our molds the other day!), but we're wondering what is the best lye to use. Our local hardware store had what it said was 100% lye, but I've read that some bottles will say that, and then the MSDS information sheets will say something a little different. I couldn't find ingredients for that brand, so I didn't buy it (Betterbilt Chemicals, I believe was who made it). On Amazon, the top two seem to be Pure Lye (by ComStar, I think?) and Red Crown, but Red Crown is 98.5% sodium hydroxide, 0.5% sodium carbonate, and 1% inert ingredients (whatever that could be).

So, can anyone recommend a brand? Has anyone tried the brands I mentioned? And is it okay for lye to have that small amount of extra ingredients that the Red Crown brand has? Thanks!!

Technical Help in Creating / Metal Stamping N00b
« on: December 28, 2011, 02:17:31 PM »
Hey guys!! Yeah, I know, it's been a while! :P After the baby arrived, life hasn't slowed down. I miss this place, though!!

So for Christmas I received supplies for metal stamping (little metal tags, a hammer, an anvil) and some jump rings and wire pliers and what-not. I would love any advice on how to use this stuff!! I've always wanted to try metal stamping, so I'm excited to test out my stuff. :D I just don't know where to start!

Also, any super exciting and amazing news I missed in the past seven months? :D

Contests / HAF Challenge #4: Iron Chef!!
« on: June 08, 2011, 11:12:15 PM »
Hey, Handmade Artists' Forum members! It's time for our 4th HAF Challenge!! The theme this time is "Iron Chef" and is all about food!

Rules of the Challenge:
1.) Your entry must be directly food-themed. For example: You can carve a stamp out of a potato and enter that into the contest. However, you can't enter a card that was merely stamped with the potato stamp (unless the card itself is also food-themed).
2.) Your entry can be created from food (e.g., a macaroni necklace), can be a resemblance of food (e.g., a "cake" made from diapers), or can very obviously contain food-related materials (e.g., a journal made from recycled cereal boxes; a sorting game made from cupcake containers).
3.) To enter the contest, you must take a picture of your completed entry and post it, along with a brief explanation of the entry, on this thread. Everyone who sees the picture should be able to tell what is food-related in your entry (an initial explanation of the entry may be necessary, but we shouldn't have to have a hard time deciphering what is food-related in your entry).
4.) Any entries that do not follow these rules WILL be disqualified!!
5.) Start NOW and make sure your entries are posted by Friday, July 8, 2011!!!!

Once all entries have been submitted, the lovely administrators will create a blog post where you and your friends and family can vote for your favorite entry!

Prizes:
As always, we'd greatly appreciate any prize donations (free exposure for you) to give to the winning commenter! Either post your donation in this thread or send me a message.
The WINNER of the Iron Chef Challenge will receive $25 cash AND a lifetime subscription to the Handmade Artists' Forum Shop!!!!
One voting begins, anyone who VOTES and then LEAVES A COMMENT on the blog will be entered to win $25 to spend at the Handmade Artists' Shop!!
These prizes are all courtesy of our marvelous administrators!!!!

So now HAFers, with an open heart and an empty stomach, I say unto you in the words of the Chairman from Iron Chef America: "Allez cuisine!!"

I hope everyone is ready for the 3rd challenge of the Handmade Artists' Forum!! With the most mushy-ful time of the year coming up next month, we're going for a romantic theme this challenge--our first holiday challenge!! Following in the footsteps of our 2nd challenge (music-inspired), the name of this challenge is "P.S. I Love You". Anyone have a Beatles song stuck in their head now? Good!

Here are the rules for this challenge:

1.) You can create your entry using any medium, as long as your entry is romantic, mushy, and/or lovey-dovey. :) (Think Valentine's Day-inspired.)
2.) Your entry MUST include at least one item you would use for writing a letter. Some examples include (but are not limited to): Envelopes, canceled postage stamps, quill pens, old ink wells, wax seals (or sticker imitations) or stampers, stationary, ribbon, glitter/confetti, an address book, typewriters, bottles/vials, or a lipstick kiss. ;) Use your imaginations!!
3.) Once your entry has been completed, post it in this thread with a picture (or pictures), and a short description of your item. Make sure to let us know what letter-writing item you used.
4.) Start NOW, and make sure your entries are in by Sunday, February 13, 2011!!

If you have any questions, post them here in the thread, or send me a message. Once all entries have been submitted, our wonderful administrators will create a blog post where you and your friends can vote for your favourite entry!!

~Prizes~

General Discussion / What's Your Artistic Signature?
« on: January 13, 2011, 11:18:23 AM »
Hey everyone! So I'm a fan of Michael's Craft Stores on Facebook, and they posed an interesting question for the fans today: "Tell us about your creative signature- the one thing that makes your crafts and works of art truly yours! Is it a color scheme? A pattern? A style? Share it with us."

The answers were intriguing (a lot of people said "glitter" :D)! So...what's YOUR signature? :)

Creative Creations / Kid's Cardboard Oven and Sink Set
« on: December 29, 2010, 06:53:45 PM »
I didn't actually make these, my sister did for my kids. They were just too cute not to share!!

She made the pieces out of sturdy cardboard, and my kids love them!! Here's the sink. She used a soap pump for the faucet, and laundry detergent caps for the handles. I'm not sure what kind of plastic bowl she used for the sink itself, but it's very large. She even made a cute outdoor scene, complete with curtains (the curtains had gotten slightly tugged off at this point)! ^-^

There's a hook on the side for a towel.

And space under the sink for pots and pans.

The oven has some storage space on top. :)

And a roomy interior. ;)

Too fun!!

A family friend even gave the kids a shopping cart she used when she was little. It's packed full of play food, and my daughter's [handmade!] teddy bear fits in there perfectly. ;D Perfect companion to their new kitchen set!

...for many different renditions of the Hallelujah Chorus to pop up on the Internet!

This one spread like wildfire amongst my friends on Facebook...have you seen it yet? People suddenly burst into song in a food court. :) Love it. So inspiring! (And funny!)

I just came across this one the other day. Silent monks singing the Hallelujah Chorus. ^-^
