General Discussion / So my Face Painting Guild Is Having a Fundraiser
« on: October 06, 2016, 10:03:23 AM »
I hate, hate, hate doing this, but my face painting guild is having a fundraiser, so we're all charged with selling crap to our friends.  It's so we can raise money to pay an attorney to make us a 503(c)(7).

Deadline is November 2.

Here's the link:  http://www.mixedbagdesigns.com.  It's fundraiser ID 599739, and my name as the seller (link and filled out fields shown in the photos).

If you're interested in anything, great.  If you're not, no worries.  The big selling point for the bags is that they're partly made from recycled materials and they're sturdy.  The guild president has had some of the bags for 5 years, has (according to her) had them take a beating, and they're still going strong.  TIA if you order anything.  :)

Creative Creations / Beeswax Candles!
« on: May 23, 2016, 02:10:18 PM »
These had been in the works for a long time, but we finally got them started last night.  I'm so happy with them!  As we use, give away, or sell the paraffin candles, we'll be phasing them out in favor of these instead.

Creative Creations / Cutting Boards
« on: May 17, 2016, 10:40:51 PM »
So every time I turn around, my husband comes out with a new talent.  He's the one who got me into making candles and soap.  Now he's started knifemaking.  But until he masters that, he's making beautiful hardwood cutting boards.  This is his first, from maple and black walnut; it's 13" x 8" and about an inch thick, not including the feet.  I love it so much!

General Discussion / Anyone know what Stylepinner is?
« on: February 16, 2016, 12:02:09 PM »
I have Google alerts set up for certain things, one of which is Reef Botanicals.  So this was an alert today in my email:  http://www.stylepinner.com/reef-botanicals-handmade/cmVlZi1ib3RhbmljYWxzLWhhbmRtYWRl/

Anyone know what it is?  Pretty cool they went through my blog, but I can't figure it out!

Art / Coloring Pages
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:52:10 AM »
I've been listing hand drawn coloring pages in the shop (and sold a few too!) but the fun part is that I color 'em in after!  I actually love coloring... and was thinking of getting some of these new adult coloring books, but then realized... I CAN DRAW.  Ha!  So I drew 'em up myself!  Gonna do a whole pollinator series and sugar skull series, and have some fun!

Art / Zoo Garden
« on: January 09, 2016, 03:09:51 PM »
A very good friend recently told me she's pregnant with a little girl, and that she's chosen the bedding for the room, Carter's Zoo Garden.  She's due at the end of this month.

So I decided that in addition to buying gifts, I needed to do one that was something only I could give.

Started it last night, and I'm mostly happy so far.  Good thing about acrylic on canvas is it's easy to "fix" if a stroke goes awry.

The intent is to have the paainting "go" with the set, but not copy it, so I'm doing the animals my way but in the same color scheme.  I also added trees to make it jungle (since my friend called it "jungle animals in purple" when she told me what she'd chosen, so she's seeing more jungle than "zoo," which works for my purposes), and a pond for the hippo.  I also added a zebra, since I wanted more than three animals.  And since there are feral honey bees in Africa, where hippos, elephants, zebras, and giraffes all live, I'm adding a hive in the tree up on the left.  That makes it really "me," I think.

General Discussion / Business Card Holders
« on: October 10, 2015, 09:42:44 AM »
OK, what do you all use?  I need new ones, seem to have misplaced mine, and would really like to replace them with one that closes.  I'm picturing like a cassette tape case, but without the nubs inside so I could keep cards constantly stocked in it and just flip it open at aa face painting gig or craft fair.  It'd also be perfect to pass out to other artists at multi-artist gigs working under my name.

Does anyone have anything like what I'm picturing?  Where'd you get it?

If not, do you think there'd be a market for it?  Eric has a client who's a manufacturer of plastic items, but it's not the kind of company that'd make just a few.

Site Support / So... Feathers
« on: October 06, 2015, 10:45:02 AM »
As I've blathered on about, Eric and I now have six chickens.  I've been collecting their feathers, which are really freakin' pretty - we've got 5 different varieties of birds, and the two Araucanas are different shades (one blonde, one red), so there's a good variety of feathers too.

I plan to wash them up and get them all pretty and sell them... can I list them here in FOM?  Or are they not suitable for the site?  Either way, I'll follow your lead.

Handmade Artists' Shop (HAFshop) / Not handmade, I presume?
« on: September 04, 2015, 01:37:43 PM »
So, as I mentioned, we got chickens last night.  We've got 5 different varieties, with gorgeous feathers.  Someone I know on FB has already said she wants feathers, and I know a lot of crafters would use them, so I'm planning to collect and wash them as they fall off our girls.

I presume I can't list them here for sale?  I'll be washing them, but not making them, so they'd be just a supply.  Not bulk-produced in China, but really not human-made at all.

Just figured it couldn't hurt to bring it up.  :)

General Discussion / This Place
« on: July 08, 2015, 04:03:48 PM »
In light of recent posts, I've been reflecting a bit, and of course getting kind of sappy.  I've been thinking about the people who've come & gone, and December of 2009, when *I* was the newbie, bopping on in to an established community here.  I'm thinking about all the news, support, laughter, sorrow, creativity, cheering sections, happiness, gain, and loss we've had among us.  I've never met the majority of you, and likely never will meet many of you.  And yet... and yet... you're my good friends.  I don't know what my life would be like had I never found you, but I know I'd miss each of you if I lost you now.  My life without HAF at this point would have a huge hole, even on those days and weeks when I haven't taken the time to be here posting.

Just wanted to say thanks, for everything.  For pushing, cheering, supporting, sympathizing, and being you.  You guys are awesome, even the ones who aren't here nearly enough.

Art / I had a little fun...
« on: July 07, 2015, 11:16:53 AM »
... at one of those ceramic painting places.  In our move to this house, we seem to have misplaced one kitchen box.  I still have hope that we'll find it somewhere, but in the meantime, we've been sans serving bowls, and we need 'em!  So I made one!

Our regular dishes are very dark brown, so there's some of that... and then I carried on from there with a very "me" design.  Whatcha think?  Should I do us up a whole new set of dishes?

I love the before & after firing & glaze too.  So different!

Art / Just for Fun
« on: June 29, 2015, 09:49:41 AM »
Sunday I had a repeat face painting gig at a restaurant (it was my 5th time there, I think), and each one has been terrible.  It's a hotel restaurant that has a Sunday brunch from 11:30-2:30, so they hire kids' entertainment for the time period, but I think they're either not advertising it properly or doing a really horrendous job advertising it.  The hotel itself isn't in a touristy area, more of a corporate complex, so families wouldn't normally just be staying there; they'd have to be drawn in for the brunch from the surrounding area.

The brunch itself is always pretty sparsely populated, with lots of empty tables in the restaurant and very few kids out of those.

Well, each time I've gone, the host tried his darnedest to get any kids there to get painted, but most parents said no, so each time, in 3 hours I've painted a whopping 1-3 kids.  Mind you, I can paint 15/hour and take my time doing it.  so 1/3 to 1 per hour is dreadful.  So boring.

Usually, they've got a DVD of Aladdin on repeat play on a big-screen TV (I can practically recite it now) in the too-chilly room where they station me (off from the main restaurant, which is also unhelpful, and with closed, albeit glass, doors), and coloring books and crayons on the table for any kids who wander in.

Yesterday there was a different hostess, and although I told her I was ready to paint, I'm not sure she tried to push for it with the patrons like the usual guy does.  He seemed more excited about it.  She also didn't have the coloring books out or Aladdin on.  It's like she wasn't prepared at all, though it seemed like she knew who I was and why I was there.

So I set up and sat.  In silence.  Thankfully, after the first 4 of these and how bad they were, this time I brought my sketch book and some colored pencils to occupy myself.  At least I was creating art, and if anyone asked, I could just say I was working up design elements for new faces, which isn't really untrue.

Also thankfully, my phone told me there was wifi free at the hotel (no code needed) and I realized I could put on Pandora, so I had music and sat drawing... and painted NOT A SINGLE PERSON.

But I got this cute dragon out of it!

Art / Canvas Painting
« on: May 11, 2015, 12:43:40 AM »
I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but I think I did... the new restaurant where I'm face painting once a month is owned by a couple with three kids.  The husband really was running the place & the wife there when she wasn't at her day job.  I love these people and we've already become friends.

Well anyway, the wife asked if I could teach canvas painting, which is really hot right now, and do it at their daughter's 12th birthday next weekend.  I said sure & asked what her favorite animal was.  The kid was so enamored with the fact that E & I are beekeepers, that she wanted me to teach them a honeybee!  A girlie honeybee, and her favorite color is blue.

So I was all set to do it; her mom was buying all the supplies for everyone, and I was just going to show up & teach.  And I figured photos from this would be great; it'd open up a whole new income stream for me, a whole new offering with party entertainment to go along with my face painting.

Then she told me she quit her job - it was sudden, but a long time coming, the culmination of a lot of abuse in an industry that finally made her say "enough."  So that's great, but now she can't afford the party, so that's off.  She told me her daughter's reaction (12 years old, mind you) was, "That's OK, mom.  I have lots of birthdays to celebrate, but you need to be happy too, and you weren't there.  How awesome is this kid?

So yesterday I bought an easel and canvas (I haven't had a real easel since my mom threw mine away years ago & I've been angry about it ever since) on a crazy sale at Michael's, and tonight I painted her the girlie honeybee with a blue background that I'd designed for her in my head.  Of course, I'm also using it as advertising for the new party service, but I'm giving her the painting as a birthday present since she didn't get to do it herself.

I think it came out pretty cute!  Eric loves it.
