Title: Looking for something special from a jewelry artist
Post by: MakinTheBest on June 04, 2013, 02:42:05 PM
We have a friend that lost his dear dog and is very upset about it.  He is looking for a way to keep a lock of his hair; such as a locket of some sort, and was hoping we could help.  He is a guy, so nothing feminine.

Let me know if you can help us as I would really love to find something handmade for him.

It is not the type of thing I do, but I would think that a key ring could be a great option for a guy.

perhaps encase the lock of hair in resin and then turn it into a key chain fob.

I have never done resin, but a picture of the dog with the hair would be nice.  What kind of dog was it?  My 18 year old is nearing the end and every few days I think I will have to put him to sleep.  It is hard.

I think this is a great option. Lisa, having been through what you are going through now, I know how hard it is. Even when you know in your heart that it is the right decision, it doesn't make it any easier. Give Harry? a gentle hug from me.

I have the resin, can easily make a designed container for the hair.  Contact me off list, and we can go from there.  john@rasmussengems.com

the key chain is a great idea.  we have made several in the past.

I could put the hair in a stained glass pyramid, with clear glass.  Just about any size from 2" up, well ok maybe 6" at most

I pitched the key chain idea to him and he was not really interested in it. He said he was looking more for a locket on a chain.
Not sure if we have any people here that do lockets or not.
Here is a picture of his dog.

I might be able to some really simple, like a glass bottle pendant with the dogs hair, perhaps have him keep the tags as well, and add those as a charm (thinking more like a St. Christopher type of charm look with the tags).  The bottle would be like the ones I put the colored rice in, but it would be Hair of the Dog instead.  I seal them with a clear sealant so the cork will never come out.

Here is a link to a listing and a photo of the item (replace rice with hair).

His latest comment
"Im thinking something like maybe a dog bone type locket, or a paw...or maybe even a sacred heart. Big enough for a small inscription on the back, with maybe a heavier, masculine type chain....?"

What kind of material is he looking for?  Sterling or Gold?  Stainless Steel?

I might be able to cast pieces and find a small hobby hinge to join them together as a locket, instead of Sterling Grains, I would use solder (96-4 Lead Free Pewter), cuttle bone casting method and could maille or find a heavier link chain.  Does he have a price range?

He said stainless. I'm hoping he will just sign up as a buyer so you guys can work it out.

Sorry it took me a bit to sign up, have a lot going on right now. Stainless seems like the way to go. Man, I miss Ed.

This is so precious!  All these wonderful people getting all riled  up about a doggy!   As a  dog lover and former dog owner I love this attitude!   Wonderful,  kind hearted people.

Welcome to the site, and I'm glad people here will be able to help you.  We're a pet family too, and have been through it too many times.  I'm so sorry for your loss.  Hopefully the keepsake will help.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog.  They really are like little members of the family.
Most of my jewelry is girly, but maybe I will look into making something more simple, like the paw print charm on a chain or something..
Take care,
Erin

Same here. Given time it will get easier, but never really goes away. I find myself getting weepy when I think about ours that have gone. You have friends here you can lean on.

I want to  thank everyone for their kind responses. Hopefully it gets easier with time. Also, thanks to those trying to help me create this remembrance of Ed.
