Title: Name our Version of the Treasury
Post by: MakinTheBest on February 08, 2012, 02:42:01 PM
Ok, so we narrowed it down to a few names for the HandmadeArtistsShop version of the treasury and want to see what you like.  We will keep this running for a bit while they work out a few bugs and then we will have the unveiling of the ?????.

It makes my teeth grind.  It's a mall.  Malls = mass-produced crap.  And it doesn't help that Jared, the newish crap jewelry chain store, calls itself "the galleria of jewelry."  It's given me a serious aversion to the word.

Galleria

Unfortunately in our mass produced world of strip malls, what once was meant as "art" now means Sears  :-\

My grandmother was from Vienna and no matter how long she lived in the States, there were certain things that she would say and do that were truly European and nothing would change that.  One of the things I loved most about her.

Sounds fine, Andrew.

Those of you who are not from the US - don't Americanize yourselves!  Don't even try.  I love different cultures, and I love that we're getting more & more here.

FYI, none of you has annoyed me.  If anything, the fact that mass-production stores and malls have appropriated the word and twisted it annoys me.

Well it is on the front page, not working right though. Lucky my developers are elsewhere or I'd shoot them.
If you click on buy, highlights are on a tab to the right as well http://handmadeartists.com/highlights-view/
Play with it if you want but it is not right, I already tested this morning.
The title doesn't link to the treasury, the pictures do not link to the treasury, the pics on the front page do not link to a treasury. I already sent these comments and couple of more to our developers. At least the box on the front page looks ok and does something, although it is not doing what it is supposed to do.
Anyway hopefully it will be fixed today, tomorrow latest.
Andrew

Here is a link to the one I created.  http://handmadeartists.com/highlights-details/?id=20120221141026509a6&uid=28042011120854&index=

There were items in the last three boxes on the bottom row.  Boxes two and three came up with a message of undefined after I pasted the links to the items and clicked okay.  The fourth box on the bottom row came up with an Internal Server Error in the picture box.  None of this shows on the completed Highlight.

Questions...  How do you delete an item if you change your mind?  ... and ...  How do you rearrange items once you've filled most of the boxes?

Lemme check.
I only did 16 items. So I didn't do the last row. I'm sure there are no re-arrange features, this isn't Etsy LOL
Haven't tried to delete one yet. But you treasury is lovely.
Glad you filled out the description and keywords as well, that is very important as it becomes the page meta.

Let me be the first one on this thread at least, to remind you that we are SO GLAD this is not Etsy!  Guess we just have to be careful to put things in the correct order from the beginning.

I just went back and looked at my collection again.  This is really interesting ...  the items are NOT in the order I put them in!  They've been rearranged.  TRusk's fountain pen was my very first item, and Dahlish's clutch toy was my third item.  Can you tell what the criteria is for ultimate arrangement?

I don't see it changing on the highlight page when I look at it.
But in the bottom box on the front page it is dynamic, keep reloading the page and the highlight image changes for each one everytime the page reloads. Sorry but we take no favorites seriously

This is not a problem, just an observation.  When I built the collection, I put certain items in certain boxes.  They are in different places now, although they are not changing places.

And I love the fact that the items rotate on the front page!

I think I found another glitch with the highlights.  I love the skull in the leather highlights.  So I left a comment, then scrolled back up and clicked on the skull to look at the description.  It sent me back to the shop home page.  I figured I hit a wrong button or something, so I went back to the highlight and clicked the skull again.  Same thing happened...  it sent me to the shop home page.  So I went back to the leather highlight and clicked on one of the other items.  Again it sent me back to the main shop home page...  not the items in any of the clicks.

I tried to look at one of the items on the St Patrick's day page.  I clicked on it and was taken to the many page.  There was no way to tell whose piece it was or where to purchase it.  Also, how does this work.  As I never had an Etsy shop, I don't know how to find the pages, who creates them... etc, etc.

Wouldn't it make more sense for the highlights to show up at the bottom with the category of the highlights rather than the person who created them?  Also, does that mean there can be an unlimited number of them at a time?  It seems a bit much to me.  I assumed it would be one or 2 at a time.  I already feel a bit of overload when I go to the site between all the featured artists, blogs, etc.

Surprised I missed that yesterday, it is fixed now. Our developers are actually working! Amazing, we'll see how it progresses from here.

It will simplify when the site finally gets merged a 100%, hopefully. But the highlights will just keep rolling as they are created, and the 4 most recent will be featured on the front page.

nice job on the Highlights so far made a few comments on a few i will gather a few things and make one soon. Have you thought about adding a few more links to the highlights list..like if you get to the list of highlights and click on one the say you click on a item there is not a easy way to get back to the list of different highlights unless you use the browser to back tab a few times...my 2 cents

Quick suggestions for when we do data entry.

First - when you click create, can there be a notation towards the top that says you have to to have a minimum of 16 items.  I spent a lot of time filling in the title, description and keywords and then adding my items, not knowing that I didn't have enough items to put in my collection.  I wanted to group a certain style of scarf that I make but only have 7 of that style.  Is there a reason there has to be a set amount?  16 seems kind of high.  I thought highlights would be subsets of your products. Having 16 anything similar will exclude your smaller artists.  ???

Second - can they add a text note that what you want to enter in the text boxes next to the ok button is the product URL?  That would save first timers a lot of time and frustration  :P .

I think it is a great concept, just not as intuitive as it could be with a couple of easy text notations.

Please let me know if we will be able to enter collections of less than 16.... otherwise I am stuck until then.

Thanks so much,Anntoinette

Ok, I know I am tired, but I swear that the pics I used to create a highlight collection are now distorted once I saved it.  They are the same pics used in my shop, (and they render fine), but for some reason the rendering is off in the highlight module.  :o

Also, I read in some of the other comments about the items not being in the same order as how we put them in, and I am seeing that as well.  Viewing mode seems to sort them differently then data entry mode.

Honest I am not trying to be a pain.  I promise I do love the concept, it is just some quick observations I am putting out there.   8)

@Cr8tiveLefty, When I make a Highlight I don't use any of my own items, I promote other artists works - so of course this means I have plenty to choose from and will never have a problem filling the minimum 16 spaces.

I've seen that they switch up positions too but as far as the photos becoming distorted - I've not had that problem.

It's new, it'll all be worked out no doubt!  :)

I am very sure everything will work out fine.  Just making observations as I saw others do on this thread.

But now I'm so confused.  Did I completely mess up on how we were suppose to use this feature.  I thought we were highlighting our products.  Was this intended to highlight fellow artists, like a wishlist or favorites?

Do my photos look fine when you view them?

You can use that feature any way you'd like. No worry, I was explaining how it would not be a problem to fill the minimum spots. Your photos look fine to me at least from my iPad. Also, input and feedback is always encouraged here.  :)

Ps I think I used one of your scarves in one of my Highlights  ;)

Ok the pagenation at the bottom of the highlights list works, the next arrow at the bottom http://handmadeartists.com/highlights-view/
A note was added to the create treasury letting people know they needed 16 items.
A note was added to the box where you paste the url that says product url.
On the front page the highlight box on the bottom, instead of just username down there it says Created By and has your username as a clickable like to to your shop.
He couldn't find why the order switched upon publishing but is still looking into it.
We are adding a "Back to Highlights" Button on the bottom of published highlights so that people can get back to the list easily, not done yet though.
Hope that helps.

I also don't use the Highlights for self promotion.  In my opinion, that is not its purpose.  Their purpose is to show highlights from other artists on the site...with a theme if you can find enough to fit one.  If everyone used the Highlights for self promotion, it would be just like a repeat of the shops.

Thanks for the update, Andrew.  The Back to Highlights button helps a lot.

We really don't have a rule in place for self promotion...so I guess if you want to do it have a ball.  My suggestion would be to do a Highlight of other artists and include one of your own pieces.  That way it doesn't look like self promotion but you still get to show off a piece.  Just trying to think like a buyer.  :o

Thanks Kimberly.  That's a good idea.  I was referring to highlights that have all the creator's items in it.  It really is better with a mixture of artists and styles...makes it more interesting.

In reading these comments, I seem to be the only one that didn't understand what highlights were for, so I have deleted mine.  I thought it was to highlight a subset of our work, since there is so much out there on the site as a whole. But since I was way off on that I have corrected it.

Just so every one knows there is a link on the top of the site now for highlights. Right next to mission.  ;D

I found the link, I did not find the directions for setting it up.  If I go to look for items and then return to highlights, it is all gone.  There must be a simple secret I have not found.  I realize also that a big part of the problem I am having with the forum is the reverse order of replies to posts, newest last now instead of newest first, it takes a lot of scrolling through old replies.  :(  It used to be easier.

Lisa,
To create a highlight you should open up the shop in another tab. Go to the highlight menu hist create will logged in. Type in a title, description, keywords and have the shop open in another tab or window. Find the items you want to feature and copy the url in the browser, click back to your treasury tab and paste the url in one of the boxes. Do this for a minimum of 16 items and hit save and your done.
As far as new post being at the bottom, I changed your profile and now new posts are at the top.
