Title: Shirt Revamping Contest!!
Post by: CraftedRoots on June 21, 2010, 03:35:45 PM
Okay, everyone! Here's the difficult contest you've all been dread--errr, waiting for!! The challenge is to take any kind of pre-made shirt and revamp it, upcycle it--whatever strikes your fancy! You may use any type of shirt, be it a t-shirt, dress shirt, kid's shirt, or bikini. You may also use any type of material that will help you with your creative process. If you're not good with a needle and thread, remember, there are many ways to fuse fabric (fusible tape, fusible web, fabric glue, wires, just to name a few). Get creative!! As long as you are not going to sell your piece or wear it in public, it simply needs to hold together long enough for you to take a picture of it. ;) And do remember to take a before and after picture!

The rules are as follows:

Once all entries have been submitted, we will start a new post with all entries where you and your friends can come vote for your favourite piece!!

Now, I bet you would like to know WHY on earth you should submit your creativity to such a challenging process! The WINNER will receive $25, as well as two (2) weeks of free advertising on the forum and blog, and on Makinthebestofit.com and Chainmaillebymboi.com. Also, once the voting has begun, anyone who votes and leaves a comment will be entered to win a $25 gift certificate to the Handmade Artists Forum Shop!! All of these prizes are courtesy of our wonderful administrators!! ^-^ Finally, I will also write-up an HAF blog post about the winning piece and its creator. How's all that for incentive?

So get those creative gears spinning, and let's see your greatest shirt revamping!! ^-^ If you have any questions, feel free to post them in this thread!

Where is the money coming from not your pockets i hope…
great contest.

We are using part of the ad budget for the prize.  Our thought is that a contest like this is great advertisement for our amazing talent on the forum and the coupon for use in the HAFshop will get another sale for one of our vendors.  Trust me, we hashed this out for a bit and decided that it works to everyone's benefit.

hmmm, it all depends on the t-shirt.

Do we have to use the whole t-shirt, or like, just the necklines off three?

Well, you can use any part that you like, and pretty much any amount, but just remember that the shirt/shirts is/are supposed to be the main part of whatever you use it/them for. So rather than making a purse, for example, out of leather and embellishing it with the shirt, you should instead make a purse from the shirt. Do you see what I'm saying? And you could then embellish the shirt purse with leather--or anything, really!

lo this is perfect!  as I'm packing up to move, I'm cleaning out a lot of things - and I have such a hard time throwing anything even half way useful away - so now I have an excuse to use an old very comfy shirt that has been worn till it's literally falling apart!

Thanks.  I am a little sad because I just discovered the Angelowe half of Angelowe and Dalavaccio is making a corset out of two shirts and just started yesterday.  But she started before I mentioned the contest so we couldn't get a picture of the shirts.

I think I might follow her lead, only I'll make a doublet.

I was really hoping I would have time to do this cause it really sounds like fun. BUT, with trying to finish getting our new store set up and open, I don't have much time for anything. Good luck to everyone entering! I'll try and pop by and see what's up.

The idea in my head is nearly concrete and I've bought the stuff I need.  Today I'm spending the day at my sister's place, watching my nephew, so I'm bringing my stuff and while he naps I'm actually getting started!  Woohoo!

Well, for mine, it was my idea, but I wasn't sure of some of the logistics, so I did look online to get an idea of how to do some things.  This is totally new for me, so I really needed to check out a couple things.

I really hope thats ok since I started it today & got a LOT done.  The whole base is done, in fact.

Go ahead and use the tutorial. :) I know how it is to have an idea in your head, but sometimes you need someone else's help to make your dream come to life. As long as you're not plagiarizing, it's all good. Perhaps you can add a link to the tutorial and show what you did differently with your piece.
Title: Re: Shirt Revamping Contest!!
Post by: Larissa on July 09, 2010, 10:57:37 PM
Cool!  It's just one part that I'll need the tutorial for, the rest was already in my head and pretty obvious to me.  You'll see why once you see what I'm doing.

I have to say, sewing is relaxing; I'd forgotten that!  My mom hates sewing so she's never owned a sewing machine and neither do I.  I like doing it all by hand, it's very cool.  I need to do more of this, I think.

Crafted could you push the deadline a week for this challenge? The HAFguild is having a challenge as well and the voting should end the the first week in August. So if you push the deadline of this challenge to the 8th the contests will not overlap.
Does that work for you?
Thoughts?
Thanks

So do we have any idea how many of us are participating in this?  I'm all excited because I was working on mine tonight and made a lot of progress.

I'm having a LOT of fun with this.

I'm really glad you decided to think this up; it gives me a chance and a reason to do things I either haven't done in a long time or have never done before.  With all I've done over the years, it kind of disappoints me that my crafting has narrowed down to just the soaping & face painting, so this forces me to expand back again.

I dunno, I guess I'm being kind of sappy tonight.  But I'm in a really good mood because of this project, so I thought I'd say thanks for putting me there.   :-*

I'd like to know how many as well.  I know that I'm happily working away on my project.  :D  After struggling to come up with an idea, I thought, "What project do I think is most ill-suited for a shirt?" and went with that.

I'm so happy to hear that we have until the 8th to complete it!  I am somewhere between three fourths of the way and halfway done, depending on what else I am able to accomplish between now and the deadline.  So I am very happy for the leeway.

I haven't used my sewing machine in years… Just went down the basement and looked at it and found that the wire to plug it in and the peddle are missing. My husband got it for me on my 2nd Anniversay… and we are married 38 years…..So tomorrow I am going to look around and see if I can find where I hide it… My dad use to tell my mom ONLY U and GOD knows where it is …. So dad I have become my mom…. giggle  I am not even sure it will work I guess the last time I used it was about 20 years ago…. I wasn't into crafting then… I just made clothing for myself and gifts.  and then life happened… and boy did life go fast.

LOL!

Meanwhile, I actually got my machine all loaded with thread, top & bottom, today, and started sewing a bit of my project.  I had to undo part because I had a real mess when I tried to sew something on but forgot to put down the foot.  So I undid that part and will redo it tomorrow when I'm not exhausted.  I should be able to finish it pretty quickly after this, if I can get this sewing machine thing down.  Funny, it's supposed to make life easier, and it's actually harder for me right now.  I'm better with needle and thread and will be 'til I get used to it.

Man, I hate not being good at things right away.  I like to just pick it up and do it.

My turn!  OK... I started with this green t-shirt:

And then in the course of making my project, decided I also needed this t-shirt:

The green one was the base of my project:  A puppet!  I drew on it, sewed it, cut it, and turned it inside out.  Used a cardboard box & foam sheets for the mouth, filled the head & arms with poly-fill I had in my craft closet.  Hot-glued on the eyes, sewed on the pompom eyebrows, nose, and hair (which is leftover yarn from latch-hook kits I did years & years ago).

The blue one would've been WAY too large to be a t-shirt for the puppet, so I made a new puppet-sized t-shirt out of that one.  Cut out the shirt pieces (eyeballing it, no real pattern) and sewed them together.  The denim embellishments are from an old pair of jeans I was going to throw away.  And it's "09" because that's my nephew's birth year and I'll be giving the puppet to him - it's made sturdily and well, and not just for this contest.  I even cut off the collar of the t-shirt, cut it shorter, and sewed it on to the puppet's shirt neckline.

An indoor shot:

And then we took a trip to the yard (during which I got horribly riddled with mosquito bites, what's with the mosquitoes this year?!):

And a close-up of his adorable, expressive face:

Oh, and if you're wondering, the only part that's machine-sewn is the shirt:  the denim parts and the body of the shirt.  The arms of the shirt are hand-sewn, as is the collar.  And the whole puppet itself was done by hand.

I would like you to meet Jenny.  She is my model.  Here she is in her Sunday best.
I used the whole T shirt … The bottom of the T Shirt is the hat, the top is the scarf/cowl and the left over I made the bracelet.

LOL, those photos are crazy huge, but GREAT JOB!

It kind of reminds me of a project runway challenge -there was one time when they said the designers had to use ALL of the fabric they'd purchased, so Uli made that fabric necklace.

I actually like yours better than hers.   :D

It's OK!  Do you have a photo editing program?  I use Gimp, it's a free download from gimp.org.  I find that if you shrink the photos to 500 pixels horizontally, they're pretty much the perfect size for the width of this forum.

Thanks Larissa, by the way when you upload with Tinypic you will see a dropdown menu where you can choose the size. I just use message board size and it will resize the pic for you.

She was having some issues getting the post up.(http://i38.tinypic.com/2qlzo7r.jpg)(http://i38.tinypic.com/30b2o3q.jpg)(http://i35.tinypic.com/300fdio.jpg)(http://i37.tinypic.com/j0l55j.jpg)(http://i34.tinypic.com/260ek9f.jpg)

There are no before  photos because I read the directions after I started altering the shirt.  If you use your imagination, you can see that it's a plain pale green  shirt. I love fancy stitches and fancy threads so I used both. No thread  and no stitch combination was used twice.
I  started with the collar, then went to the back yoke and then the left  front. The penguins are NOT upside down. I live in the northern  hemisphere and the penguins are in the southern hemisphere. From my  viewpoint, they look exactly as they do on the shirt.

Well, we had a lot of interest in the contest, so.......if anyone has an entry they want to enter at the last minute, let us know!!! Send us a message if you have to. We would like as many people to take part as possible, and if you're almost done with your project, we don't want  all that time and effort to go to waste!! This is the first time we've done a contest quite like this (er...right, Andrew?), so just let us know if you need to slip your entry in at the last second.

Great shirt, Deb! Lovin' those stitches!!

Yes this is the first forum wide contest and I'm cool with last minute entries over the next couple days. I'm going to have a tough time getting the blog post done over the next couple of days. Lets say that by Wednesday we will close out the last minute entries and I'll get the post up so we can start voting.

Sorry but I'm going to be working in NY for the next couple of days and time is not going to be on my side.

Since my pictures are kind of huge and I don't want to mess with posting them on this forum, here is a link to my blog:

http://greenwycke.blogspot.com/2010/08/finished-shirt-revamp.html

It didn't turn out like how I envisioned, but I learned a lot and had fun.  No pattern was involved.  And now if I need to make a small parasol in the future I'll have some idea of how to do it.

I have to say that it was definitely worth it to pick something I didn't have any experience with.  I'll try this for future contests.

Okay, so the final, FINAL deadline is now Wednesday, August 11!! ;D I guess I'll wait to post my pictures on that day, so no one feels bad about being the last minute poster.

I love what everyone has put up.  This kind of contest is my favorite sort, because you have no idea what people are going to do.

If anyone wants detailed info on how to do a parasol like that, I might be taking it apart, so I can get all the pictures I didn't get while making it.
Title: Re: Shirt Revamping Contest!!
Post by: CalcedoniaDesign on August 08, 2010, 08:32:36 PM
I like this kind of contest cause it is out of the norm of what we make… I got carried away and made a few other items with t shirts and posted them on etsy to sell… now we wait to see if anyone likes them well enough to buy them… I got lots of views but so far no sale… It was fun .. especially since this summer it was just to hot to knit or crochet.  I am even making my little 6 year old sec. cuz a recycled scarf and hat necklace and bracelet for her birthday…
It was fun.

I know!  For me, the challenge resulted in requests for more, from both my sister and Eric, who's sad to see this puppet go.  Plus ownership of a sewing machine and 2 books so far.  Plus ideas for things I can sew for Reef Botanicals, too!

Thanks for letting me know!  What I'm thinking of as a possibility for RB wouldn't be a kiddie thing.  Do the rules apply for gifts to my nephew, though?  'Cause that's the only kiddie stuff I'd be making.

It only applies to 'for sale' stuff, or things you make for kids in the general population, i.e., you're going to make puppets to donate to a children's hospital.

Good, that makes complete sense.  I wonder if all those Etsy clothing, quilting, and knitting people know that.

Probably less than half do...  What's REALLY annoying is that places like Wal-mart are exempt from many of the regulations. :(
Title: Re: Shirt Revamping Contest!!
Post by: Larissa on August 09, 2010, 10:35:18 AM
How does THAT happen?!  Of course, that explains the crappy stuff coming in from places like China, with bad dyes, lead-laden paint, poisoned dairy products, and dog-killing pet foods.

Title: Re: Shirt Revamping Contest!!
Post by: Larissa on August 09, 2010, 10:40:23 AM
By the way, I haven't visited your store recently, but you should be using that as a selling point - "We conform to all governmental regulations to ensure your child's safety, health, and well-being."  It should be in your store profile, on the front page, and in the description of every item.

Don't think I don't use the fact that all my face paints & glitters are FDA-compliant as a selling point, and that the Reef Botanicals stuff is 100% natural, with no synthetic colors or fragrances.  Of course I use it!  It's what sets us apart from other face painters and soapers.

Your regulation-following ways set you apart from other quilters, doll makers, and stuffed animal makers.

Hey guys!! SO sorry you've been waiting all day for my horrible entry!! ;D My baby is getting her molars in and has been crying all day long. :-X Makes it hard to get anything done. :'(

Anywys, darn, I was hoping our short extension would encourage lurkers to come out of the shadows and post their last-minute entries!!

Oh well, here's my anticlimactic entry. ;D I started with a nursing shirt that was functional, but not very feminine. Nursing shirts are great to work with because you almost get two shirts in one--except the bottom layer shirt has gaping holes in the sides.

Here's the shirt:

And the bottom layer:

I decided to deconstruct it and reconstruct it as a nightie. As you can see, it's not too spectacular, but it's really only about half done. I'm getting more into the project than I thought I would, so I'm trying to decide what details to add...flowers? Lace? Ruching? We'll see! :) So it's not 100% finished, but there ya have it. Where it's at now is pretty much all I was planning to do with it, which is why I'm even bothering to enter it, but hopefully within a month or two I can make it prettier. ;)

I'm saving the sleeves for the winter as arm warmers, and still have extra fabric to play around with. :D

My friends are having the same issue, and so is Eric when I gave him the link in gchat.  I think somehow our computers are forwarding OUR versions of the links, which now point to the totals page, not the voting page.

I tried telling E to go to handmadeartistsforum.com and just do it that way, and the most recent post he's seeing is July 21.  I had the same issue with it when I looked last night.

If you have already voted you will not get the option.
There are 79 votes so far so I think it is working

That's just it, I haven't!

Did you try to clear cookies? That might work.

Ugh, is that why it looks like some new people voted in the comments but not in the voting poll?

I hope it is working right, the votes keep coming.

Yeah, but I was up late last night, and there are 3 or 4 new comments saying "I vote for" but no new votes that correlate.  So either 3 or 4 different people voted incorrectly or they were getting the results page & voted via comment rather than poll.

I think it is fine now, the poll closed for some reason, maybe the dates reset somehow yesterday when I was trying to fix it.

Weird that it's giving you so much trouble.  Have other polls done this to you too?

No.
This is the first poll I've run on wordpress 3.0 upgrade and I think there are some plugin conflicts here and there that needed to be worked out.

Aaaaaaaaaaaahhh... I'm still trying to figure out why computer programmers are so ready to release programs before they've got all the bugs worked out.  This has been happening since the '80s!

Good question! My husband says that Windows 7 is actually the completed version of Windows Vista. ;)

OMG, mine says that Windows 7 is what Vista was supposed to be.  My laptop runs on Vista, so when it went wonky, it had to be reloaded with Vista.  He spent HOURS cursing at it, and finally (after getting it to work) told me that we had to get me Windows 7 or he was downgrading me to XP.

Honestly, I liked XP, which was on my old laptop.  But I really don't want to go backwards.

I added a couple more pics for greenwyche, if want them changed please let me know

Ahhh!  I'm so sorry, I got sidetracked and forget to check back here.   ;)  Thank you!  The pics you chose were good.  (By the way, that isn't me in any of those pictures, I'm a dude type thing.)

When I open up the link, I am given the option to vote or see the results.  Very strange.   But the vote count does seem to have changed since the last time I viewed it.

If you haven't voted yet, you'll see the vote option.  You're allowed to vote too, y'know!

I am now addicted - I see a t shirt and I want to cut it up.  I just made a bunch of stuff for my little cuz for her birthday.  Just mailed it yesterday so I don't know whether she will like the items but here are some pictures.  Totally addicted to cutting up t shirts. giggle (http://i36.tinypic.com/2dj11t2.jpg)(http://i33.tinypic.com/e83ms4.jpg)(http://i35.tinypic.com/2dtws9w.jpg)(http://i34.tinypic.com/ix70ib.jpg)(http://i37.tinypic.com/2edw1t5.jpg)

Congrats to Larissa for wining the Shirt Revamping contest. Your ad is up and I'll send over the $25 prize money. Who wants to pick the comment winner?

Anyone? I would like it to be random so I'd rather not pick.
Thanks

She's not the only one going shopping!  I'll be using my winning funds to purchase this: http://www.etsy.com/listing/53880271/seaglassbeach-glassbutton-charm-style from one of our newer HAF members.  I've been drooling over it since it was posted here, and now (probably tomorrow), I will own it!

Greeaat, looks like I got recruited as the official contest creator/winner interviewer of the forum. ;D Haha, Just kidding, I don't mind! In fact, I love doing this stuff, and will be happy to plan the next one!! :D

Mid-late October sound good to start the next one? Or would November be better for everyone? Or even December? Or does everyone feel impatient--er, inspired--and want to do it in September?? ;D

Thanks.  Funny thing is, as a kid I collected shells.  I think the two huge boxes housing my collection are still at my parents' house.  And in the collection, I also had a bunch of stuff made from shells - dolls, jewelry, little figurines - so this bracelet immediately drew me.  I've had an affinity for shells since grammar school!

I realized after I bought it that Deezie has only posted here once, so I made sure to message her and let her know I found her here.  Hopefully that brings her back.  :D

I would start a thread now to try and find the theme, maybe we can do a Halloween inspired theme and you can add a twist to the media. Just a thought, what ever you guys come up with
