Title: Featured Member Ad
Post by: chainmaille on May 05, 2009, 08:51:39 AM
I've been trying to figure out a way to do this and be fair about it without causing to much work for me. I thought of featuring the member with the most posts, then I thought that wouldn't be fair because some of us have more time than others to post.
So I figured I'd make it simple and easy for me and not to show favoritism but to be random.
This is what I came up with post your ad for your site or shop in this thread and I will feature them as they come in the ad box on the bottom of each thread.
If you haven't seen it yet when you open a thread on the very bottom you will see my ad and my wife's ad displayed.
I will put, at random, a featured members ad there to be displayed for a day maybe two depending on how many responses we get it may be there for a week. I will feature each member for at least a day, now don't get mad if someone is up there for more than a day and you were there for just 1 day, this is strictly random and as my time permits me to work on this. I will be as diligent and fair as possible, but I take days off too so don't be surprised if the display time is random.

Mine look like this:
(http://chainmaillebymboi.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/simple-elegance.jpg)(http://chainmaillebymboi.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/makinthebestofitavatar-125.png)

Don't worry about code just post a 125x125 picture here in this thread with a link as to where you want the ad to link to and I 'll take care of it.

I hope this will get a lot of response as I know most of the members here have shops, websites, or blogs they want to promote and this is another way that my wife and I can give back to the handmade community of artists for free.

So post away and put your ad in this thread, the first one will go up right now! I hope you enjoy this new feature as I thought it was a pretty good idea.
Enjoy 8)

Edit: as we go through the ads I will then go back and start again to keep a rotation, also depending on the response I may feature more than I member at a time, to show some extra love. This all depends on the amount of submissions I get. So don't be shy, I'm not!

Jeanne
Jeanne you can always promote your blog.

I think I may feature more than one at time as I think that many members will get involved in this with the initial response. That way I can display more at one time.

Nah...I think those that are trying to sell are more important and should be featured.  I don't always say anything interesting on my blog.   ;D

Ok....*gasp, cough*....I finally got it...these many hours later.  I've been at this ad all day.  I don't know my way around graphics programs very well to begin with, and it seems my Photoshop Elements has decided to take leave of its senses on my 64-bit Vista's latest updated version.  ARGH!!!  Soooo, I downloaded Paint.NET and after about 200 attempts, I THINK I have a working ad.  Please let me know if it's just awful...like if you can't read it or something?
I sure do appreciate your generosity in letting us have this ad space!!
Thanks guys!!!

Alright I've caught up! Yeah yeah you thought you could break me but no! I'm resilient!

So let me do the math the last time I did up to 18 ads and now I added 8 so 18+8= ???
Calculator time 26. So if I'm doing two ads a day thats 26/2=13 right!
So as of this post I have 13 ad boxes set up featuring two members per day.

So bring them on! and I'll keep posting if we get more ads I may feature more than two a day. I'm going to play it by ear and see how it goes.

Reminder 125x125 pics and give me a link so I know where you want your ad to send people to.
Title: Re: Featured Member Ad
Post by: chainmaille on May 10, 2009, 05:37:42 PM
Ok all I've made an executive decision, with the consultation of Mrs. MBOI, and decided to place the Featured member ads on the right side bar on the front page! This way we can feature 4 members per day and everyone's ad will not only get quicker rotation but better exposure as it is on the front page. So right now as you see we have 4 of our members ads prominently displayed. I'm saving the area under the last ad on the right so I can display our Forum's Badge and Code for everyone to grab once it's complete. So right now we have 26 ads which isn't divisible by 4 so I need more ads so that we can keep this going.

just so everyone understands once I run out of ads I'm going to start over from 1 and run them again in order.

We will run 8 days so if you want to get your ad into the next rotation you have a week to get it posted. Then I'll start another ad box. Enjoy.

You need to resize your ad to 125x125 or  I can't put it up.

Alright I'm caught up to here and just created ad box 9. The only ad I didn't do is darkmere, waiting for a re-sized ad. So ad box 9 still has an open slot.....this is a note to myself by the way.

So if you want to be in the free ad rotation put your 125x125 image and link here in this thread and you can be in the rotation. right now it's a 9 day rotation featuring 4 members per day.

Just a note to all those who are currently participating in the featured ad rotation. I'm doing this for free to help support handmade artists. I do however expect that the members participate in the forum though. I haven't figured out what the criteria is for removing an ad for non-participation yet. I just don't want to feature ads for any member who is not participating in posting and trying to help support this forum.

I guess I'll just have to figure out what criteria needs to be established to consider someone as participating. Maybe it's a post a week or something like that.
If there are any suggestions along these lines I'd be glad to here it.
Thanks,

Thanks Suzie! Those are better than what I did! Andrew if you haven't already set mine up feel free to use whatever one you think looks or works best! If you have already with what I did - no problems.

I've been off internet availability for a couple of days so I've been mia - let me know if there's something I'm supposed to be doing for this.

Thanks - Jeanine

I've set yours up using the ad you posted if you want a different one let me know and no you don't have to do anything except participate in the forum.

Andrew - if it's not a problem if you could use the first one that Suzie created that would be great. It looks way better than mine!

Thanks for doing this - I appreciate it. I put a link on my blog back to the forum and talked about it in our Alberta Street Team chat thread. Evenings for me are really crazy with driving my children around but I will be sure to pop in and out of the forum when I can.

Thanks!! Jeanine

Ok I'm caught up to here mairzydozy your in the ninth box, I still have one more slot open for the ninth box, which will run in two days. So if darkmere will re-size I can get them in. If someone comes in before I'm not waiting for someone else so post your ad.

Face of Contentment I changed your ad that is running today to your current request. I had you in there twice for some reason. I think I just got confused from the multiple submissions. so you are in the 7th box which is running today.

Like I said I need one more to fill up the ninth box which will run in two days, so if you want a free ad post it soon to get the final slot in box 9.

The numbers are for my reference by the way ;D

Caught up to here yourstruli is the final spot in the 9th box.
Lucky you because today is the 9th box I will start over tomorrow at 1, so everyone has 9 days to get me more ads if you want them displayed.
Title: Re: Featured Member Ad
Post by: chainmaille on May 27, 2009, 12:54:27 PM
Figure I'd bump this up.
We have 36 ads running right now out of 250 members.
I'm really surprised more members haven't jumped on this as the forum alone has gotten almost 140,000 hits this month alone. That's quite a bit of exposure.
Anyway I'm also running all the members shops daily on the members shops page of the blog here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/?page_id=5 .
The ads on the forum are currently running every 9 days featuring 4 members per day, I'm running the same members ads on the front page of the blog as well here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/ so that is double exposure. So every 9 days your ad will be featured all day for free on the blog and forum. Not a bad deal.
Anyway if nobody else jumps on this that's fine it just makes my job easier. ;D
Enjoy

Ok I'm caught up to here and added the last 4 ads. They are now in rotation and are the 10th ad box we are currently running the 6th so yours will be up on the fourm and blog in four days. They are already posted on the blogs members shop page here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/?page_id=5 and will stay there 24/7. CrystalElegance  you may want to submit a 125x125 box I cropped it and resized it the best I could but it is a little small, your choice but it is up as is now.

Requirements for being in the featured member ad program are absolutely nothing. The only thing I ask is the you participate regularly in the forum and blog. If I see someone hasn't posted in forever I'm not going to continue running free ads. The only other thing I ask is that you place our badge on your websites and blogs as a sign of support to the forum.
Thanks I'm working hard to help promote everyone else, I would just hope to get a little in return, and thanks to all who have already placed the badge on their sites. I have seen quite a few referrals pop up from badge placement

Thanks so much for your help I took the ads you corrected and fixed all the ads on the blog and the forum.

An hour later and I'm done, I don't know how much time you spent but thanks and all the people's ads you fixed should thank you also.

New announcement: I will not accept any new ads that are not 125x125.
Look we have now 44 ads in 11 ad boxes and I'm trying to help everyone by providing a free service, so please help me and now seedlings jewelry who choose to help, by submitting the proper size ad and a link. I guess half the time on the links and google search the shop name.

So please help me help you by giving me the right information the first time.
Thanks,
Andrew

So let me do the math 12 x 4 = ???? wheres my calculator. Got it 48 ads.
There is now a 12 day rotation, so every 12 days your ad will show up on the forum and the blog!

All the ads are up 24/7 on the Members Shop page on the lbog here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/?page_id=5

So keep them coming I'm currently running day 1 now so you have 12 days to get into the next rotation.

Alright I'm caught up to here thanks again for the re-size seedlingsjewelry, I'm sure all the members you have helped are extremely grateful.
Anyway the 14th box is now full and will go into rotation in a couple days.

So if you want in you have time 2 weeks or so before the 15th box will go up. So get your ad in.
So we now have 14 x 4 = 56 ads in rotation!

The only thing I ask for the free advertisement is that you participate in the forum and put the badge on your site or blog.
Thanks and Enjoy

Here's one with your banner (which is quite lovely!) and I added one of the models because I thought they are very eye-catching but you let me know and I'll take it out.

Hi, Just wanted to thank you so much for all your help. Tis really funny that you did that with my banner and used the manniquien.  That is exactly what my son did when he did my announcement to friends and family.... he used this picture 23541385 If you could use that picture I would greatly appreciate it. If not you could leave it as you did it.. I just was not able to upload it or download.  This part of all this I am not good at..sigh and it so fustrating that I can't figure it out.. Really appreciate all you do. My son is the graphic designer for the USTA and it is his busy time gearing up for the usopen.... thanks again Calcedonia

Caught up to here your 2nd ad in the 15th box, all ads are also posted here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/members-shops/

Just a reminder to all who participate, we do the featured ads for free for the betterment of our members businesses all we ask in return is that you post our badge on your blog or website and participate in the forum.

Mrs. MBOI and I were talking this morning about how to handle this as some of the ads we are running for free are for non-participating members, this is troublesome as it has taken a lot of work to keep up with this. So all I'm asking is to keep up your side of the deal and I'll keep up mine so that I feel we aren't being taken advantage of.

As the summer moves on Mrs.MBOI is going to go through the ads and check sites to make sure the featured members that are in the free advertising program have placed the badge on their site if possible and have been participating in the forum. Those who have not been participating and or have not put the badge on their site will be removed from the rotation and are more than welcome to adveertise on the forum through project wonderful.

We are not trying to mean, just fair, as those who participate in the forum will have to wait longer for their shot at a little extra free publicity while the ones who don't participate get it for nothing.

I hope I made sense just trying to keep this thing fair, and I hope you guys would agree.
Respectfully,
Andrew

Aye, I think you've been exceptionally fair with offering this regardless so as long as you've asked folks to do something in return and they aren't holding up that end, I think you've every right to take them out of rotation.
Title: Re: Featured Member Ad

Andrew...

You are more than fair...don't apologize for doing what you have to.  More often than not, sorry if I offend anyone..., those who don't participate, only see this group as a way to get free advertising and free advice.  If you have to be harsh and we all know you HATE conflict, then just do it.  If people know you are serious, maybe they will think twice about taking advantage you and the others who are trying so hard to promote their businesses.  Make them work for it, I say.   :police:

Thanks for the support guys.  We were trying to be careful about how to word it without offending.  So many people have posted, twittered, blogged or put up the badge that it really helps; but I feel bad that those people have had to wait longer to get the free ad space behind those that popped in, signed up, dropped a badge and were never heard from again.

I signed up not too long ago and am just now reading all the information about your site and what you do. I did an email clean-up today so found you. I have been so busy with re-doing my tags for better SEO on Etsy and starting one ArtFire Studio I have not had a chance to really be a part of this site yet. I just read your post and now I feel really guilty about just adding my ads because maybe I can't post very often but I did put your badge on my blog and will # you on twitter. If you want you can take me off the advertising. I just resized my ad for my supply shop but guess I best not add it on top of the other ad for my handcrafts. Just got so excited about a chance to improve my SEO I forgot about looking into what you expect. I sure do not want to be accused of abusing your help. I cannot promise too much posting, is all I am saying. So, how much posting is required to be not thought of in a negative way here. I would rather not sign up than feel like a sponge.

Any guidance and honesty would be greatly appreciated here.

Thank you guys for all the kind words we try very hard to do our part to support this handmade movement. But it takes time and money to support, that's one reason why I put the donation button up to help ease the financial burden.

Please let me clarify what we expect in return for the free member ads.
One is the badge, if you can, I know that you can't put it on Etsy and probably not on Artfire, but you can put it on a blog or website. If you can't no problem just participate.

By participate I mean post every now and then, tweet a little, stumble a little, give some advise to a newbie, write a blog post, submit your pretties, just be a  part of the family.

I don't want to say that you need to post once a week to be considered as participating, you know your motives. As Mrs. MBOI goes through the list she will try to contact the members that are not participating and give them an option to do so or their ad will be removed.

Chances are if your reading this then you are participating and it's not an issue. ;

Charmimsy
'Tis Charmed you posted while I was replying your fine I'm not going to put a limit on posting, people get busy and I understand. Just a little help like you said you are doing is fine. I'm talking about people that signed up a month ago don't post and shoved their ad up there. We don't want to be taken advantage of blatantly.

We don't want to be taken advantage of blatantly.

:P  Right, if you are going to take advantage don't do it blatently  :P

Charmed, I have a lot going on in my life as well and certainly understand.  I will use my judgement and give everyone a quick email if I feel that they are just posting a badge and running.  For the most part, there are only a few that I can think of right off that signed up, added their badge and have not been heard from since.

Awesome! And I think we can add our badge to ArtFire. I will do my best to take part. I truly believe in what your are doing here. And I can also make a donation next month to help out.

Do you allow two ads if a person has two different types of shops? Here is my supply shop if you do. If not I perfectly understand. Now I am going to browse around your site here and see what other wonderful things you have here.

I added you second ad, I will only accept second ads for two distinctly different shops like your situation. I not going to put and ad for someones Etsy and then someones artfire. So now you have to do twice the work LOL ;D

Anyway if  someone has two distinct shops I'll put it up but at least one needs to be handmade, then the other can be supplies such as charmisy's situation. I'm ok supporting our members supply shops because our members need supplies and it would be great if we buy from each other now and then.

So note to self, I'm caught up to here, there is one more spot left in the 15th box and you can see all the ads here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/members-shops/ 24/7

I am sorry to ask this but I would like to replace my last ad with this one in hopes the wording is more legible. I have done these myself so it is kind of a non computer person's try at being a graphic artist. I hope to be able to get a professional job done on this shops graphics soon, like I did the other shop, Tis Charmed. Until then I have to at least be able to read the words, I hope :-[  I hope this is not too much of a bother. I really appreciate it. And if is not better than I won't bother with it again until I get someone to do it for me.

Thank You  :)

Title: Re: Featured Member Ad
Post by: handcrafts on June 22, 2009, 02:24:15 PM
I've been trying to figure out a way to do this and be fair about it without causing to much work for me. I thought of featuring the member with the most posts, then I thought that wouldn't be fair because some of us have more time than others to post.you're right. with summer here i probally won't be posting alot because i have 3 girls that are constantly on the computer. i'll try to at least post i a week but please keep my website advertised because i really like this site it seems everyone helps out thanks

Handcrafts-don't worry about it...your ad will stay up.  What we are concerned about is that a few ads were placed and then they never signed in again...just disappeared into the sunset.  We want to feature members as much as possible and love to promote handmade as it is a HUGE part of our lifestyle both with crafts and doing for ourselves around our house.  As long as you are here every so often and comment occasionally your ad will remain; there is no set number of posts I am looking for, just as much participation as your time allows.

I am going to take it on a case by case basis.  I know some people personally are going through a rough patch and I understand that...Lord knows that it has happened to me before.  Like I said, I won't put posting requirements or log in time minimums on it, but it is pretty easy to tell who is interested in our cause of promoting handmade and who is not.

These ads are featured on the blog members page as well as rotated down the sidebar (right hand side) of the forum and blog.  We use paid ads on the top bar of the forums through Project Wonderful.

Hi Tracey, the only thing is it needs to be 125x125 and the proportions are currently off.

I'll try to resize it or you can submit one that's sized accordingly if you'd like!

All I need is the image and the link. I don't need all the code that may have bee created in your other documents. jpeg, gif, animated gif all those should work. If you still can't get it up click on my profile and email or pm me the file or ask seedlings for help she posted earlier in this thread she has been helping like a goddess with all the ads.

Hello,

I need to update my Charmimsy Supply shop ad. I have two shops here. One is my handcrafted items and that one is fine the way it is. My other shop, that you have so graciously allowed here is Charmimsy. It is a craft supply. I have a new banner and ad and would like to use a shrunk down version of my craftcult ad.

The URL would be:
http://www.charmimsy.etsy.com

I have tried uploading several time but don't see it working. I am going to post and see what happens. If there are several pics I am sorry. If there are not any pics I will need help uploading. Thanks

I don't know if anyone noticed or not but I changed the feature members ads on the blog to run on an ad rotator. Basically every time the page is refreshed or a new page or post is opened the ads change on the left side. This will give everyone more daily exposure as the ads will be displayed multiple times a day instead of being displayed once every 20 days as that is how many free ads we are displaying. So take a peak and see for yourself on the blog http://handmadeartistsforum.com/

Enjoy I'm trying to continue to make things better and plan on trying to do something similar on the forum when I get a chance. I have to overcome some software and theme changes first so please bear with me.
Thanks

Well I'm caught up to here you can see your ads 24/7 here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/members-shops/ .

They also go into rotation on the forum and are on a rotator on the blogs left side bar.

I also went through the list and fixed a few, there were a few ads not displaying correctly, but now they are fine.

As I've said many times in this thread I put these ads up for free in an effort to support handmade and the forum. It would be greatly appreciated if everyone could reciprocate and put one of our badges on your blog or website. You can find the badges and codes here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/grab-our-badge/ make sure you pic the one you want as they all link to our different sites.

Thanks again and enjoy.

This is a great idea. How does one go about making an ad? Or can you just use your URL? I have no idea how to make an ad ... can I use my Etsy banner, and if so, how would that work. My etsy is raedawn.etsy.com

Any ad has to be 125 X 125 so the banner won't work.  You can make an ad in Paint or in Photoshop...what do you use to edit your pictures?  Maybe someone can jump in and help you with one.

Just reload your photo here that you want me to use and let me know if you want me to change the link.
One ad per person is about as much as I can handle. so pick a shop and I'll link it.

Your ad is in the rotation.  You can see all the ads that rotate through the sidebars here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/members-shops/ (http://handmadeartistsforum.com/members-shops/) .

I'm pretty sure you're "qualified" just by virtue of being a member.  But you need to create a 125x125 px image you want as the link to your ad.  Like mine is this:

ellesbeads your ad is up, I linked it to your etsy shop, If you want it changed you need to let me know as you didn't leave me a link.

GlasstasticTreasures                          your up!

happycraftstore                          your ad is not up as you did not supply one yet.

Caught up to here.

On another note I've been doing these free ads for over a year now. All I'm asking for is a little support, put the forum badge up on your blog participate on a regular basis. I'm going to have to go through the ads when I get some time. I have some on there that I know people aren't participating. I really don't expect a lot in return, just a little. I'm managing well over a hundred ads for free, and sometimes it is difficult for me to swallow working so hard and not even getting a link back. Sorry if it sounds like I'm whining, I'm really not, just want things to be fair.
Thanks to all of you and there are many who have given back to the forum with their time, it is greatly appreciated.

I have finally figured out how to add the handmade bade to my wordpress blog (had to do it via a text widget and insert the html)

Now if I can do the same on my website I'll be well chuffed.

Red the best option for this is to use the additional options below the post window. Use the attach function to browse to your computer and upload.

I don't want to freak anyone out but I'm not sure how we are going to handle the featured member ads once we reconfigure the site. I need to speak with Kimberly, I'm thinking of possibly removing all advertising from the site completely as it is distracting, not sure if we can afford to do that or not. So don't worry yet, just a thought.

At the very least you should keep some paid advertising, but I will add I am NOT a fan of the animated ads (or whatever you call those flashing seizure inducing things) Just my two cents.. yep just 2 cents

Blue you're hilarious! I can just see you seizing all over the floor LOLAnyway it looks like all the advertising is going to be removed even the featured member ads. We had a three year run of giving away free advertising. I think we will still keep this page http://handmadeartistsforum.com/members-shops/ on the blog once we merge. But all the sidebar advertising is going to be history. Unfortunately it is going to cost us extra money. The project wonderful ads on the right bring in $100-$150 a month. I don't like putting numbers out there, but anyone can go to project wonderful and figure it out anyway. Well that money is going to have to come out of pocket right now. Basically all the the money we make in PW goes straight back in PW on the advertising we buy. We barely ever have to supplement the funds in PW as we just spend what we make. So now we will just have to supplement PW so we can maintain the same amount of advertising. As the shop grows we hope to be able to increase the amount of advertising even more. Right now we pretty much spend every cent we make on advertising, some submission services, development, and server fees! Anyway I that is the scoop! All the ads make the site look less professional and I think that once we merge we are going to move to the next level.

Blue, I agree with you about the flashing ads, when I am reading something and seeing movement out of the corner of my eyes it drives me nuts!

Some of the real flashy ads can be a bit distracting!  I love that "patchwork quilt" of members That might be the way to go -keep it   and sell spots on it?

Well boys and girls we've had a good run. Over two years of free ads for our members is now officially over. As you can now see all ads have been removed from the forum. I hope everyone enjoyed the ads while they were here.
Thanks again,
Andrew
