Title: Why the drop in comments in the gallery?
Post by: trusk4u on January 21, 2015, 10:33:30 AM
I don't know about all of you, but I have noticed a big drop in comments in the gallery sections of this forum. I know for me I posted my new bracelet a few days ago and have 1 comment from Monika. I know she's posted stuff and I have been by to comment. It just makes me wonder if I should bother since  apparently no one is commenting. Just lurking maybe? It's discouraging at least to me. ???

Teresa, I noticed the same thing....it seems no one on this site might be interested to comment anymore.....
I check daily and do my thing....don't know....this hole forum has become a lame duck....don't know what to do about it..... :(

I am not fishing for compliments. I am just curious what's going on? I know people are busy, etc. but this doesn't look good to the outside eyes that might be checking us out. Just my opinion.

Not really sure how to respond to this. Kimberly and I spoke and will see what we can do to spark more interest in the forum side.
It really is up to the person, I know many are not forum people, some are though, we still have over 500 vendors on the site. I know that some have never even ventured to the forum, because you don't see them.
Anyway, we'll keep doing what we can on our side. Kimberly just sent out a newsletter to start a new blog ring, so that may start more interest in the forum side. We haven't sent out a newsletter in forever so I'm sure that hasn't helped, I mean people get tied up with life, so we need to send out newsletters from time to time to keep our name floating around in peoples head. I've just always tried not to do it too much because I think it is annoying.
All in all it is a group effort, so all you can do is your part individually and it will all hopefully come together.

Kimberly and Andrew, I just checked in like a new customer wanting to sell here

https://handmadeartists.com/sell-info/

I found NO info about the forum and what "newbees" can do in the forums! This might be the right spot to mention and  a consideration for you two to include detailed info at this spot.....
I.E.  daily chat, support, showcase items in galleries, blog rings, twitter rings  etc.
How to make highlights, what they are....etc

Just an idea.....

We may add that but there is also the large "forum" at the top of every page and it is mentioned in the FAQ under communication.  Also, most people that sell on other multivendor sites know to look for a forum or message board section.

Yeah, you can only do so much for people. Forum is listing right at the top in the menu bar. It's not hard to find.

I wish I had the magic answer for all our "issues" but I don't. I just get frustrated with people.  :police:

In addition to commenting  on the board here there needs to be more communication  about the site  to the public.  You have no idea how many people I encounter in my limited contact with the outside world who have never heard of handamdeartists. I'm doing my bit in the Fountain City area of Knoxville.  Just so ya know....   that's the area  where the city park has a heart shaped duck pond.

I agree MsMarty, word of mouth is huge. I know we handed out over 100 cards last weekend. Every bit helps!

I try too!  I carry HAF cards and hand them out to anyone who makes things or likes to shop handmade.

I told people all about it when I had the store. Had a poster on the bulletin board at checkout. I still tell about the site whenever I can.

I've now noticed that even the jewelry thread is slow. I seem to be the only one posting there lately. That thread was always the most active other than the what are you doing one.  I assume people are encouraged to post their new things in the gallery when they sign up for a shop. I sent a new person a message just today telling them to do that. I am confused by it all.  :-\

Not sure about everyone else, but I know I haven't been posting/commenting on anything for an age, just lurking when I have time.  Perhaps it is the same for others?  I'm hoping to start getting more active over here again, regular life has just been pretty crazy lately.

I got involved in a discussion of handcrafts with  a scrabble opponent last night and he will be looking into  this site as another option to selling his woodworking products. Yea scrabble!   LOL

I'm pretty new here to Handmade Artists but when I go to markets of course all stall holders chat about markets they been to and what they use to advertise their business and what pages they are on. As I only attend Craft and Handmade markets I myself am surprised that no one knows of this site but after having been on a few different sites (etsy, zibbet and made it) I find this site to be the most affordable for unlimited listing and give everyone my card as it has my site on it and hopefully that helps get the word around, well in Melbourne Australia anyway.

That's a great way to get it going. I try and let anyone who wants a place to sell or buy to try here. I even have my husband doing it now since he's been doing shows. This last show he did he was talking with a guy who was looking for an online venue and was thinking about Etsy. My husband told him not to go there but to check out this place. If everyone who has a shop here just shared with one other person, just imagine the exposure we would get. Referrals are always the best.

Hey, we like Aussies!  :D  And yeah, that really is the way.  I have specific HAF cards I printed up (from a file either on this site somewhere or that Andrew or Kimberly emailed, I forget which).  They're for the shop in general, not just my shops, for which I have cards to my personal urls that redirect to my HAF shops.

Hey there ! I know I haven't been posting as much.  I have a lot on my plate . I have noticed a big drop in the action on the forum. It would really be great to see it come back alive . I love that there is one because on the sites that don't have community its kinda dry. So thanks for having one. I am going to advertise the forum on our big facebook group. There are some people that have stores here that post.
I honestly think people have so much going on that  they get lost in it all. I know I could do so much more but my time is limited. I actually have to make my art everyday lol......that is a good thing....

I know Debbie, there is a big drop..  I had items posted in the gallery from November that have been hardly looked at nor shared....so I lately have not made an effort to even go this extra step.....by posting it there....

It would be nice if things  came alive again, but just a few ....that's just not cutting it. So I too wished there was more participation....but.... ???

I wonder if eliminating some of the really stagnant threads to consolidate the forum a bit would be a good move? There is so much here and I imagine it can be overwhelming for many.
Title: Re: Why the drop in comments in the gallery?
Post by: chainmaille on May 08, 2015, 07:18:41 AM
Deleting content is never a good move, all the threads on the forum are searchable by google and they do search. Their spiders and other search engines spiders are here all the time.
Maybe when the new site is done it will be better.
All I can say is we do what we can, If I could figure out how to make people participate it would be great.
Over the years we've done many different things, some help for a  bit and then people fade off.
So who knows. I'm just going to keep plugging away.

This may help some.....  I check  and read the forum every morning.  I don't always comment  so I feel sure others might be doing the same.
I don't have very much to say that is meaningful to others  but  I like to keep up with what is going on.  It is possible that  folks are reading and going on with their day as I am.
I do enjoy hearing  (seeing)  from other crafters.

Maybe you already have this and I just haven't noticed, but perhaps making one or two sellers admins to help keep the flow going in the forum, encouraging new sellers to participate and maybe get some of the "rings" going again. I know for me, I visit the forum most days, but often don't have much to add to the conversation. Most of us are marketing here, our websites, facebook, google+, Pinterest, Instagram.....the list goes on, on top of creating products, packing and shipping.  Maybe have some forum contests that can be marketed elsewhere or polls.  The way it is now, the same few people are consistent visitors to the forum with not much else in the way of participation.  Just a thought....

We have moderators.
As far as contests go, if you look on the main page of the forum under outreach and promotion, we've had many different types of outreach. They all help and they all work to a point, it just takes someone to say, hey I'll run one.
I know I don't personally have time to run any promotions right now, and Kimberly hasn't had time either.
So we are really at the mercy of our members to come up with some ideas and run some promotions or contests or something.

There have been some great contests here (especially the one I won that totally got me into sewing!), but it's gotten hard.  I was here practically 24/7, but especially in the spring, the bees and gardening and all that really take up so much time and attention.  I haven't even really been doing creative stuff other than face painting & painting hive boxes!

With all the changes on many of the social media places, it might be hard (or harder0 to run the rings like before. I'm not convinced that people really pay that much attention to them because they are bombarded with so much info already. Contests may be the way to go, but then we would need people willing to donate time and prizes. I guess I'm afraid it may end up being the same people over and over. I would welcome being proved wrong. I'll have to give this more thought.

It is my feeling that summer is not a good time for most  folks....   Most of you have  kids at home which means  camp, shopping  and other  driving  responsibilities.  I would love to see  some contests in the Fall when  we are beginning to have to "hole  up"  indoors.  There are holiday occasions  which, if  it were run  for 3 or 4 months,  could be incorporated into a long running contest.

I agree about summer not being the time to do contests since, just like everyone else, I tend to want to be out and about in the summer as well as chasing the kids from one thing to the next.  In the fall we can do a big contest with a kickin' prize and see if some new people want to jump in.

I believe the lack in comments from the vendors is due to no sales.    No sales after a long time of putting out effort is  very discouraging.     I know for sure I am not the only one who has had no sales but tons of views.  Bots searching?    It's a shame because to have a  shop here is so reasonable and the shops look good.  I like it here.      I promote myself but nothing happens.  I  could be wrong but I think that I am not the only one experiencing this.   I will be surprised if I get a comment on this except for maybe the administrators who are probably working hard to make this site great.   I will keep trying though.   Best of luck to everyone as promoting one self is not enough.
Title: Re: Why the drop in comments in the gallery?
Post by: chainmaille on September 09, 2015, 05:29:54 AM
Everyone needs to promote their self as well. Every person you bring to your shop, is one more person that knows about the site. The difference between us and etsy is we never took money from investors. Therefore we were able to keep the site pure. However we didn't have 25 million dollars like they did to promote the site, that is why our growth has been so slow. My goal is to keep plugging along and hope that little by little we will keep growing.

Thanks for the response and all that y'all do.   I say its the  The little engine that could and tortoise and the hare.  I'll Keep plugging along promoting and perhaps a chain reaction will happen.  I know its hard.  This beats having your own website where everything is entirely up to the person who owns the shop and you are non existent.     This is a combined effort.     Have a safe and happy week

I tell everyone I come in contact with, and if someone's looking for something specific and it exists here, I link them here any chance I get.  I care less if *I* get sales and more that the site grows and gets sales overall.
