General Discussion / Apologies for absence
« on: October 08, 2009, 01:03:51 AM »
I'm gearing up for two big events, one this weekend and one two weekends after that, plus another weekend show in November, and also getting really caught up in my extended blogging, 365 items in 365 days.  Hoping to be back in the swing of things once I get through Steamcon weekend.

I look at them occasionally, but not for awhile.  Mainly, as was mentioned, because people are seriously underbidding what the materials and work would be for what they want created, but also because I'd get frustrated because there's no indication when an alchemy bid is accepted by someone so I'd find one I'd be interested in and go click on it and find out it's already bespoken.

I did just have someone make an alchemy request of me directly, though, and that went quite smoothly.

I'm 17 for 17!  Actually considering trying for 365 in 365 just to see if I can.

Here's today's creation:

Jewelry / Two "Manly" Wire-Wrapped Pendants
« on: September 10, 2009, 10:57:10 PM »
A few weeks ago, a gentleman of my acquaintance informed me that I am neglecting his gender, and that I needed to add a few masculine pieces to my collection. I've been keeping this in mind, and playing with concepts in my head, but nothing came of it until this past weekend. One of our regular Sunday routines is a trip out to one of the beaches in our area, where the munchkin spends hours happily chasing seagulls and pigeons, playing in the sand, and collecting rocks. If we'd let her, she'd bring home half the beach in water-rounded pebbles every week, so we have a tradition. She can collect as many as she likes while we're walking and playing, and before we leave, she lines them all up and we have a rock-judging contest. The two rocks that are judged the best, she can bring home. The rest, she tosses back in the water before we head back to the car.

This week, in her collection, were two beach pebbles that begged to become pendants. One is a matte white, probably a siltstone or a very fine calcite, and the other is a calcite with inclusions. Here are pictures of the almost-completed pieces:

Haven't listed them yet, as I need to acquire some cord for stringing.

Jewelry / New Steampunk Earrings

I started sorting and reorganizing this morning, and found some delightful surprises, things I'd bought and forgotten about.  One of these things was a lot of pocketwatch parts, set with rubies.  I found 5 matched sets of pieces, and ended up making them into five pairs of earrings:

Quite a job to finish a piece  a day!

There's some pieces I can't do in a day, so I'm working a little on them and doing a smaller daily project each day as well.

Thank you!  I've got day 4 up now:

http://dbvictoria.blogspot.com/2009/09/30-days-hath-september-day-4.html

Today was a bit of a challenge, because I'm about 1/2 done with a parasol, but no way was I going to finish it tonight, so I decided to string a pendant I've had sitting around for months, put together all the supplies I needed for the task and then couldn't find where I just set down the pendant.  So I picked another piece instead - luckily I'd already been thinking about what to do with that one for the last week or so.

Thank you!

It's going to be interesting.  I'll be working on a few bigger projects interspersed with some things I can finish in a day, as there's some things that can't be done in one evening.

Thought I'd posted this here, but I guess I forgot:

I just saw Julie & Julia (which was completely adorable by the way), so I was ripe for the idea when I came across another blogger's challenge - make and blog about an item a day for the entire month of September.  I'm 2 for 2 so far, hopefully I'll keep the momentum up.

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

3 down, 27 days to go!

(and it figures, the only times I make a mistake in my coding are the times when I don't use the preview function!  edited to fix wonky link)

is that beaded fringe on the black and brown one? I love them, very unique!

Yes - it's alternating black and clear beads.  That one was so much fun to do - I really went over the top on it.
