Founder / artisan of Alaska Baskets, Simone Martin, is of Russian Yup'ik descent and native to Alaska. Known for twenty years as a pysanky (wax resist dye) egg artist, a few years ago she was casually taught a traditional Tlingit basket twining method, and found the craft and design potential fascinating. Simone also studied basketry formally under a reknowned master basket weaver of the SW Native style, similar to Tlingit and Yupik twining. At present Simone is flourishing artistically and has developed a distinctive, contemporary design and style which reflects her reverence for nature, the indigenous people which surround her and the land she calls home. Her specialties include: twined waxed linen & bead baskets; coiled waxed silk & bead baskets; coiled waxed silk & bead necklaces with matching earrings; coiled waxed silk, bead & feather dance fans.
