General Discussion / My creative hiatus is over!
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:55:03 PM »
I had a large chunk of time where my creativity took a break. Meanwhile, my amazing boyfriend starting doing some lapidary work with Wisconsin nephrite jade...and it seems my muse has returned! Too bad I'm working 60 hours a week right now and can only squeeze in a little jewelry time on the weekends. I am confident that next year will bring some amazing new pieces to my shop instead of it just languishing as it has been.

Tonight I came home to find a big bowl of tumble polished Wisconsin nephrite jade slabs and stones waiting for me! And about thirty cabs so far too. Steve is becoming really good at shaping and polishing cabs. I'll be wrapping all winter long at this rate!

General Discussion / Re: Google+ custom URLs
« on: April 06, 2014, 12:33:41 PM »
Strange, I've never added my phone number and it didn't ask me for one. As far as I'm concerned I don't want Google to have any more of my personal info than it does - but if it's on the internet anywhere then Google already has it. From a business perspective I want Google to have as much info as possible because it will make me easier to find on Google searches. With G+ or any social media site I think it's important to keep the business separate from the personal. Even so, I have one phone number and don't have it listed anywhere. If a customer wants to contact me, they have to start through email so I can confirm they are real, interested people.

General Discussion / Google+ custom URLs
« on: March 15, 2014, 06:19:32 PM »
Seems like g+ rolled out custom URLs a while back. I hardly ever get over there but instead of those ridiculous numbers I like the idea of a custom link. So now my link is google.com/+Rdhwirework Might be useful if I ever get more active over there. If not, it still keeps somebody else from claiming the link.

I've been out of the loop for a long time with the schedule I had last year so I popped in to check things out. I remembered there was a redesign in process so this was one of the things I wanted to look into. Hope everything is still going well with that!

Luckily I got a promotion so I'm back to a normal schedule! That means I'll actually have time for creating and listing again without sacrificing sleep to do jewelry "stuff".  ;D

Site Support / Re: Changing user name?

Thanks John, I'll do that now. Multi-tasking between setting up my new site and updating my bazillions of links on the web but hopefully I'll be ready to start uploading saleable items tomorrow  ;D

Site Support / Changing user name?
« on: January 06, 2014, 05:33:10 PM »
I finally decided to go ahead and change my business name, build a new site, etc. So now I am in the process of rebranding everything from Silver Dreams Design to RDH wirework. I see the username says it cannot be changed. Does this mean I need to open a new shop as RDH wirework or can Andrew work some magic on that end?

Destash / Jewelry making magazine/book destah
« on: October 17, 2013, 07:32:09 AM »
In my cleaning/purging of supplies I realized I have about 3 dozen jewelry magazines and a dozen soft cover books I do not need or want. Funny how they build up like that. I decided to test a fb shop app with this destash and if I like the app, I'll keep it around. I didn't add photos and left bare descriptions, but we jewelry folk know what we like  ;)

If anyone has any feedback about the app functionality I'd like to hear it.

General Discussion / Re: A new trend?
« on: October 03, 2013, 03:40:41 PM »
I remember hearing somewhere that the "organic" look is in for wire, which seems to mean big messy loops and wraps that are not symmetrical. Personally, I hate that look because it does look unfinished and not professional. Of course, I am very partial to symmetry and nice even wraps...and spirals, always spirals  :)

Kinks are another story. I'm not sure why anyone would intentionally kink wire. My nylon-nose pliers have saved more than one piece of wire from the scrap heap when I managed to kink the wire.

I really can't wait to see it! If you need any Beta testers for smart phones I'm in. No wifi at the bf's so I'm mobile-only over there. I gotta cram all my computer time into the two evenings a week I'm actually at home...

I think the changes look amazing! And I don't know how many of you shop on your phones, tablets, etc, but lots of people do consistently now. In my limited techie opinion think the white background will load much faster and the fewer photos on the main page will load faster and appear better on the smaller screens. While it might seem like a huge compromise to some people, it is necessary for the site to be optimized for large and small screens. Reducing any of the coding so the pages can load faster is really important. Nobody wants to wait for pages to load anymore-they'll just find another site.

Thanks for asking Andrew!

I saw someone mentioned spell check - in most browsers if a word seems to be misspelled you'll get the jagged red underline, just right click on that word and you should receive suggestions.

Just Life / Re: Finding the motivation to exercise
« on: January 24, 2013, 08:27:28 PM »
I constantly struggle to find motivation to exercise. I feel like I have no time, and right now I don't think I do. My time management is just horrible. I don't even have time for jewelry, mush less boring stuff like exercise. That being said, I have been changing my eating habits and have dropped 25 pounds (!?!) since Thanksgiving. Truth be told, I'm not sure exactly what I changed that caused such a huge drop, but I'm going to keep on with it and work in some exercise where I can. Hopefully we'll be above zero here in Wisconsin again soon so maybe I can even get outdoors. I'll try to cehck back in here whenever I need a boost! Good luck all!

Silverdreamdesign,
Thanks for the info.  Have you tried the studio with lights indoors?

It's on my to-do list...along with a million other things. I think it will work fine with my ottlite or even just led lights but I haven't tried it. I know they have some amazing tutorials on the site and lighting is addressed in some of them. Maybe when January rolls around I can play around more. I'm looking at 60 hour work weeks through Christmas so I'm guessing I won't be getting many photos done or even much jewelry.

Personally I'd be really leery of buying a tripod that was only  a couple of bucks!
Maybe I've been lucky, but my el cheapo is still working fine. I usually don't buy into super cheap accessories either, especially cheap imports, but sometimes it's the only choice. Thanks for the link, I've bookmarked stuff for Santa  ;)

If anyone is looking for a cheap tabletop tripod, check eBay. Literally a buck or two if you get them from China or wherever. I paid more than that for my first and found out it was probably from the same place anyway.

If you want a nicer tripod, check out the Manfrotto pocket series http://www.manfrotto.us/photo-pockets-pocket-series. I have an older model, but I really like it. I just wish it could be adjusted taller because it pretty much sits straight-on with what you are photographing.

The Modahaus Table Top Studio http://www.modahaus.com/ is my favorite light tent ever. I won one in a contest a while back over at http://www.beadinggem.com/ and I love it. It functions as a horizonless backdrop and a light diffuser. By changing the combination of backdrops and lights TONS of effects can be achieved, but so far I've only really played around with the blue in daylight. I love that it folds flat and I can just slide it under one of my shelves when not in use.

This picture was actually taken without the diffusing tunnel. I just laid the background on a table under my white canopy at a show one day and took some shots while I was waiting on customers to appear.

General Discussion / Re: Any experience with storylane.com?

I've never heard of it either and quite honestly the invite seemed kind of spammy but I thought I'd check it out just in case. I think I need to worry about keeping up with what I've already committed to, but you never know when one of these new sites will be the next big thing. I was anti-Facebook for months after my friends joined, and Pinterest too, but now I'm like so many others and I can't seem to live without them.

I received an email invite from storylane.com and went to check it out. It seems kind of like a blog roll, Pinterest-style. There is an option to auto-import blog posts and prompts to help you create a post if you are blocked. Has anybody else tried this at all? I'm kind of curious to see what people are saying.
