Creative Creations / Lasso Basket
« on: March 20, 2015, 09:06:15 AM »
I found a bunch of baskets made out of old Lasso ropes at a craft fair and loved them!  The only problem was they were way out of my price range.  Instead I bought a few old ones and tried my hand at it and found the completed ones are worth every penny and then some!  These things require muscles to shape!  I did manage to get a very simple one done and have to say it didn't come out bad for a first shot.

Just Life / I have to ask.....
« on: March 07, 2015, 12:25:54 PM »
There was a big discussion on IBH facebook group when a member posted a copy she made of a Mammy Doll that she had when she was a young girl.  This post sparked a huge discussion about whether or not admin should allow the post to stay up or should have been removed as offensive.  The comments got ugly for some.  So what do you think?

Should we remove art because it offends or is art meant to spark feelings of all kinds and allow the post to stay up?

Blog Ring / Winter Blog Ring
« on: January 22, 2015, 12:42:27 PM »
Now that the holidays are over, it is time to get things moving again and blogging is a great way to get exposure for yourself and the other talented artists that are part of our little world.  By being part of a blog ring you gain traffic for your blog which is great for you and help gain even more exposure for handmade in general which benefits us all.

Now, this IS A COMMITMENT!  Please do not sign up if you are not willing to put up the ONE blog post per week required.  I will be checking that everyone posts their one blog per week and comments on the other posts.

The number of weeks will depend on the number of people that sign up but I promise to make it as easy as possible for everyone.

If you are interested, comment below with a link to your blog and I'll start the list and let you know when we officially begin.

Contests / Want to earn a free month of advertising for your business?
« on: January 13, 2015, 05:16:24 PM »
On IBH I will be giving away a free month of advertising next week.  All you have to do to earn a chance at it is comment on this post and tell us what the best advice you received, or wish you would have received, when you were just starting out with your handmade business?

With new people joining the craft movement everyday, how about sharing some of the things you have learned with someone new....and getting a bit of free advertising for yourself in the process?

Creative Creations / Baby Shower
« on: October 17, 2014, 02:39:14 PM »
Tomorrow we are heading back up to New Jersey for a baby shower and I had SO much fun helping to get ready!

I did the favors which I know most have seen before....the covered Hershey bars, but had a ball designing them to go with her Safari theme....

And then a diaper cake, but in the shape of a motorcycle, because I can't do anything the usual way.

With the leaves changing and the air cooling off, I was inspired to create one in fall colors

Events & Promotions / Think it is time for another contest????
« on: September 12, 2014, 10:11:33 AM »
It has been a while since we hosted a contest and now that summer is done and fall is upon us I think it is time for another.  I will gladly donate a prize of some sort and HAF always donates a certain amount to be spent on the shop so any ideas?  Themes?  Rules?

My thoughts were fall/autumn themed items which is a pretty obvious choice so if anyone has something more original I would be more than happy to hear it....

I run into a lot of cool stuff, but this one really made me stop and look again.  The artist created this in honor of the children that died at Chernobyl

General Discussion / For those that knew Linda Faigen
« on: August 26, 2014, 02:18:38 PM »

Linda was a fellow chainmailler and a woman with a fire cracker personality who dabbled in many media.  She also went by the name Isis Arts on various sites where she sold her jewelry and wands that she made.  She apparently passed away recently though I have no details.  Those that knew her, even online are welcome to like a page that has been set up on Facebook in her honor.

Just Life / Our New Home....finally!
« on: August 14, 2014, 09:43:24 AM »
Figure I would start a new thread so that you all could see what we have been up to on the home front.

From the front, it looks tiny!  We are built into a hill so you can't see much.

But from the back you can see the full house

The property is beautiful....3 acres of trees and only the hint of our neighbors.

There is a barn in the back which is about to become my studio and a weight room for the family.  There is someone coming this week to put in the concrete floor and then we start putting up walls.

The entire house was painted an ugly yellow cream from the vaulted ceilings all the way down so I've ended up painting most of the house.  I started with the boys room, since they really need a place to hang while I tear out the rest.

Nathaniel was looking for "modern" so a grid wall it is.  Wouldn't have been back except his wall is 15 ft tall and I am not a fan of standing at the top of the ladder.

Spencer was looking for something different so he chose white walls with orange trim (looks like the inside of Home Depot!) and is covering it with posters.

I am now working on the kitchen which I will post when I am done!

General Discussion / Belize - Picture heavy
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:34:25 PM »
Ok, our week in Belize.  We got there and found our hotel after a number of hours on the highway playing Dodge the Pothole!  Never seen roads like this in all my life!

Found out that they have a pet Coatamundi that lives on the grounds and will happily try to get into your room and take things out of your pockets.

Spent the first day taking a river boat trip to lamanai which is a Mayan temple

Realized very quickly that the hotel was not going to work for us.  It was way farther away than we thought from all that we wanted to see and the couple next door kept us up all night cussing and screaming.  While we were at the zoo, Andrew got talking to a waitress who informed us that the zoo had an educational center that rented out cabins in the jungle and included home cooked breakfast and we checked it out and spent the rest of the week living in a tree house!

We spent the next day at another temple called Atun Ha which was fun, but not as cool as the first one.  We hung around a bit at the tree house and ended up talking to the night manager who's son was a river guide and took us cave tubing!  1 mile down the river on an inner tube through a couple of the coolest caves.  Since it was well in the 90's all week the water was wonderful.

We spent the next day at yet another temple which sits on the Guatemalan boarder.  In order to get there, you have to cross a river on a ferry that is hand cranked.

Our final day was spent at a baboon sanctuary....well not the real one which was a mile down the road, but a smaller one what was basically a bunch of back yards.  Even so, our guide took us out and managed to call the Howler Monkeys down and we got to feed them!

In addition we also found some silly things....for example, the toll bridge which was a rusted little bridge with a small shack and a guy holding a chain across the road.  Pay 75 cents Belizian (37 cents US) and the little man would drop the chain for you to drive over.

We saw what passes for taxis in Belize

We found the prison and spent the rest of the trip making sure we didn't break any laws!  The best part, there was a sign out front advertising the Prison Gift Shop which we did not stop at for fear of being kept!

We found the best place to get breakfast in Corozal was June's Kitchen which was actually a closed in porch of a house that had 3 tables and a selection of 4 items.

All in all, not your typical Caribbean vacation for most people, but perfect for us!

I am looking for new ways to 1) get some articles for IBH and 2) find ways to get people to appreciate the work that goes into handmade.

I am looking for people from different media to write up articles about their process.  No, you do not have to give away trade secrets, but for example, a soaper can take people through the basic steps to go from nothing to artisan soaps.  Obviously include pictures and links to your own shop and work as well.  I'm hoping that if people had a better understanding of what went into handmade work, they would not balk at the price quite so quickly.

As I said, you write the article and include your links so you get some exposure and hopefully we can break the WalMart mentality that stops people from paying what handmade is really worth.

I normally do not do this but just had to help get the word out about Zac.  He has Moebius Syndrome which an horrifically cruel disease.  That being said, he has a sweet spirit and has even set a goal of going to Disney with his family!  In order to do this, he is making and selling loom bracelets to raise money.

Now for the help part, no I'm not asking you to buy a bracelet if you don't want to, but I am asking you to help share his story .  If you do share on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, or your blog and comment on the story you will be given one entry for each share to win a sterling silver sea glass pendant.

My hope is that by getting the word out about this amazing boy, he will be much closer to reaching his goal of a magical vacation that does not involve doctors and medical treatments for a short time.
