Handmade Artists' Shop (HAFshop) / Me
« on: April 16, 2016, 07:27:54 PM »
Temporarily I have closed my shop.  I will still be active on the forum, but several personal items do not allow me to continue with the shop side of the site.  I still totally support HAF and think that Andrew and Kimberly are doing excellent work.  I plan in the future to return to the shop side.

Jewelry / Agate and Owls Bracelet
« on: April 10, 2016, 05:08:56 PM »
Made a silver (Tibetian) bracelet for Debora.  She requested a toggle clasp, which is abnormal as she usually wants a lobster claw clasp.  I put silver wire through the beads and created round ends, these are held together with silver jump rings.  The bracelet is about 8 inches long.  Enjoy.

Jewelry / A couple recent custom pieces
« on: June 04, 2015, 02:01:51 PM »
First was a pair of ear rings made with Sterling silver hoops and rondelles fo Peruvian blue opal.  T     (Clear Attachment)his item is being modelled by the customer.  Second is an "evil eye" ring, made with a bezel setting and Sterling silver sheet and half round wire.  The eye was removed from a cuff link bought in Turkey about 60 years ago.  When we cut into the setting to release the eye, we found that the original jeweler had placed several sheets of paper under the stone.

both are long distance customers.  earrings went to North Dakota, and the ring to Indiana.

Site Support / TIME PROBLEM
« on: February 22, 2015, 12:14:10 AM »
From when I clicked on "New Topic" until this form appeared took over 4 minutes; accessing the site takes from 5 to 15 minutes of waiting; then the same delays to get to "My Account" then the same delay to "List New Item," then same delay to add the item to the site.  Is anyone else having trouble with delays in Handmade artists.  I am not having these delays with any other site.

« on: September 15, 2014, 04:54:12 PM »
I have been tied up with medical problems (wife).  I have not been doing anything with HA for about a month.  Will try to get back with it sometime during the fall.  Sorry, but she is not out of the woods yet, I just wanted everyone to  know that my failure to post, etc. is not any animus, I have just plain been too busy to do anything.  Will see y'all later this year.

Jewelry / DIL Birthday Present
« on: April 01, 2014, 04:05:14 PM »
My daughter in law has three children ( :-*) born in order of age May, January and September.  Rather than a mother's ring, I thought of making a pendant comprised of three hearts, in three sizes to represent the age of each child, with the birthstone set into the heart (slightly off center on purpose, the stone is centered on a line from ring to ring).  The hearts were cut from Sterling silver sheet (much filing to get them to shape), then seats for the prong heads were cut onto the heart, the heads soldered in place; the rings were wound on a mandrel with 18 gauge dead soft Sterling silver wire and then they were soldered closed.  The entire piece was pickled, then buffed with a brass bristle brush in rotary shaft tool, then burnished in tumbler for 1 hour.  Here is the result:

Jewelry / Custom Obsidian and Sterling Silver Pendant
« on: March 23, 2014, 01:45:49 AM »
Debora picked out this cabochon and challenged me to make a pendant for a necklace.  The challenge was since the finished cab was not symmetrical, which is how I like things.  She was delighted in how I almost made this look like it had symmetry.  Now to see if I can figure how to put a picture in this post.  I used the attachment function, so we will see.  The pendant is made from an obsidian cabochon with fine silver serrated bezel wire (30 gauge) soldered onto a Sterling silver backing.  The small hole is so I can push the stone out of the setting with a pin while fitting the stone before finishing.  After soldering the bale on, the entire piece was pickled, then buffed with a brass bristle brush, then burnished in my tumbler.

Jewelry / Custom Amethyst Ring
« on: September 29, 2013, 09:04:27 PM »
Taking a piece of amethyst rough (supplied by the customer) that was mined at a fee mine in Georgia, a 1.2 carat round stone was cut, then set in a commercial casting.  Since I don't do sophisticated casting in my shop, if I can not make the setting, or the customer opts for the commercial casting, I travel this route.  When the customer and his wife mined the stones, the stones were separated into precious and other.  None of the precious were facet quality, in fact, none of them were cabochon quality either (my definition of "precious" is different).  Anyway, the amethyst crystal was very clean and had good color at one end, so that made a nice faceted stone.  The casting was ordered and received.  Then the stone was set into the prongs, and ..... the ring:
