Title: Finding the motivation to exercise
Post by: Jenstangledthreads on January 13, 2013, 10:21:10 AM
I'm trying to lose weight. I have a goal - I want to be down at least 50 pounds by August, which is Renaissance Fest here in MN. If I do, and I have the money, I will buy myself a new corset and/or dress when I am at Ren Fest.

I need the motivation, though. I have so much work to do on my HAF shop (bringing over all my listings from Etsy) and my Etsy shop and my blog, and my webpage. I feel like I need to get stuff done, but I don't have the time! I just want to sit and create!

Any exercise buddies out there? Give me a much needed kick in the pants?

You took the words right our of my mouth. I have all the same issues. I feel like a hamster on one of those wheels, (if I really was one I would not need to loose 50 lbs.) My head is just swimming with things I need to do and learn so I can make a living doing what I love. This is the only income we have right now. If it where not for family I don't know what I would do. SO stress relief is needed.  I would be glade to be an exercise buddy. I will kick you in the pants if you will kick me. :police:  Let me know what you have in mind.

Sweet! I have exercised today. Right after posting. Strange how that gave me the motivation to get going. I did 30 minutes on the treadmill while watching Pretty in Pink. My apartment building has an exercise room with an elliptical, a supine bike and a treadmill and some weights. I'm not really interested in the weights at the moment. All during the 30 minutes, I increased the speed just a little bit.

I have to be careful when I work out, though. I need to make sure I don't injure myself like I did last year. So, I went and got some new shoes with insoles to protect the balls of my feet. I had a stress fracture in February and I keep aggravating it.

My downfall isn't the weekends. It is during the week. I come home from work or from my son's dance studio, and I don't want to work out. I have no energy. I just want to sit and eat supper. After I eat supper, I have no real desire to get up again and go work out, even through it would help with digestion. AT this point in my life, I can only walk - no running. I have bad knees and hips and I have fibromyalgia, which makes healing painful and slow.

I tried doing the early morning work out. I usually get up between 5 and 5:30 a.m. So, to get in a workout, I'd have to get up at 4-4:30 and I have a 30-45 minute drive to work. I did that for about 2 months. I couldn't do it anymore. This summer I will be able to do it again when my work schedule changes. But right now, I have to be to work at 7 am to be home in time to take my son to dance.

For now, I just have to force myself to work out after dance. Maybe taking another snack with me will help. Stretch out dinner a little later.

I have to place to work our right now, so I am going to try and take a hour long walk at least three days a week. It's in writing now. I will post every day that I walk so you can see that I did. If I don't sent me a big Kick in the pants. Thanks for the support.

Right there with ya, except it's 25-30 lbs here.  Maybe if we all check in here weekly?  I have the same exercise issues; I'm not a morning person & after work I'm tired.  But I have to do it sometime!  And the sad thing is, once I'm working out, I'm really enjoying it.  It's just getting the oomph to do it that's a problem.

I vote we all hold each other accountable and see how we do!

Well 50 would be good, but 75 would be better.  But then what do you do with the sagging skin girls. :(.  My heart needs about 75 less.  My daughter has been entered into some kind of contest at work by her boss to walk 10,000 steps per day.  She started today.  Nope, she not gonna make it I don't think.  Guess I could encourage her by walking with her.  Perhaps I will give it a try.  See if I can get some sleep in the dark hours then I may be able to do it.

Check back in tomorrow to let you know if I made it.

Good job, Karen!  Pam, definitely walk with her, that's terrific exercise.  If it wasn't so cold & wet here now, I'd take the dog & do the same.

As it is, I've been pretty good with the weight watchers points today & am trying to decide whether it'll be Wii Fit strength training & yoga when I get home or 20 minutes of Wii zumba.  Votes?

I hope your knee gets better. Have you thought of chair exercises? I see it on the PBS station. I am thinking of trying it out for no stress on the joints.

I might try to put some weight on it later. Right now it is up and I have taken my meds and it is under some ice. Or I'll drag out the yoga ball and knit while sitting on it.

Wow, I'm even.more out of shape than I knew.  I got on the Wii Fit for the first time in 277 days & for the first time in my life, I was called overweight.  And the graph went pretty substantially into the overweight level.  Yikes.  It's definitely time.

So I did 20 minutes of Wii cardio (boxing & rhythm parade).  Not much, but I'm sweaty & out of breath & it's q start.

Well I got my walk in 1.7 miles today about 3770 steps. That is if my pedometer is right. I have not used it in a long time. Goal as Dr. Oz would say need 10,000 a day, that will be the goal. I will wear it the rest of the day and see what it amounts to.

Good luck everybody with your work our today. ^-^

Not sure Monika, I am at my wits end with this child.  I simply do not know what to do with him.  I try to make things fun, but there is a certain amount of work that must be done on worksheets for portfolio and he is more like a mule than a child.  Much more of this and I may just have to give up.  Causing too much stress on this old heart especially since we were served yesterday with 'motion for default'.  bank foreclosure is moving forward again and without work, not sure what we are going to do or where we are going to go.

Oh, well the Lord will provide.

Hope everyone is feeling better today.

I'm so sorry, Pam. That's a tough situation.

I was able to walk on the treadmill today after dance. 33 minutes (had to finish the chapter I was on) Knee is a little sore and the other is starting to hurt. Meds again tonight.

I am going to walk off this stress tomorrow a.m. while his mother handles him or perhaps walks with me.  He could use a good run about.

I appreciate all the good thoughts from everyone.  But I have faith that everything will work out just the way it is supposed to.  just because I don't know how that is going to be does not mean anything.  There is a saying, not sure from where "it is always darkest just before the dawn".

Thank you and my prayers are always with you all.

I don't have time to read this whole thread, but... I would like to play too. I am currently doing  a 90 day weight loss healthy diet challenge, 1 week down, also 4 pounds and 4 inches off my waist,1 1/2 inches off my bust and my hips each as well as 1 1/2 inches off each upper thigh. I know unbelievable, but it's not I am documenting on video and pics. I will be updating in 3 weeks and may put it on my Facebook then fo rnow I look so bad I want to show improvement.

I have a Leslie Sanson Walk Away The Pounds DVD 1-2- and a strength workout to do at home. I will be using. I will start Monday 1/21. I do not have a good place to walk in this weather. I have used this program before and can recommend it to anyone, any age.

I am a littler sore today but that is a good thing it means I did something. I will get my walk in at the Wal-Mart. Wish I had space to do something else on days when the weather is not so good. I live in a camper and that means no jumping around. I need find a yoga or simple floor workout, maybe find that chair workout again. I should see if there is one on the internet I can download. I f any of you have any suggestions let me know. I really need to get off about 50Lbs.

I hope everyone else can get some kind of a workout in today "Just Do It" even if it only five minutes of moving around. I figure that is better than nothing. :-*

I am not looking forward to the next couple weeks. First, I have to re-train my replacement at my job because I'm getting shuffled to another department. And another office building. So, after training, I will be lugging boxes. That will be my exercise that day. Up and down stairs carrying boxes and everything else I have on my desk.
I will be at Walmart today, too! Gotta love payday. and I will more than likely be on the treadmill afterwards.

It's more about what I do eat. Good fresh healthy food, fruits and veggie, lean proteins fat-free dairy and almond milk-original unsweetened, lots of water, salads.
I eat a very balanced diet and I plan in snacks to keep my blood sugars level and prevent food cravings.
I know the foods that cause me problems so I have made a decision to eleminate them from my diet, I do not miss them, I feel wonderful!
I don't eat junk, or drink soda, I never drank much soda anyway, I gave it up years ago.

Title: Re: Finding the motivation to exercise

Chocolate will always be my downfall.  I'm retraining myself for moderation.  I've found that keeping a bag of Hershey's miniatures or something similar around helps, believe it or not.  When I'm totally craving chocolate, instead of going crazy, I just take ONE.  It gives me the taste for only one weight watchers point.

Speaking of which, I was pretty good yesterday.  Went out for lunch with Eric at Applebee's since we were out running around, and I have the WW app on my phone.  So I checked the point value on the lunch I wanted - a crazy 20 pts when I'm only allocated 28 a day!  So I ate slowly and ate HALF of it for 10 pts.  The rest is for lunch today!  And by eating slowly, I was full afterwards.

Now, I was really going to exercise this morning (did a half hour of Wii cardio & balance yesterday), but woke up too late because of premature wakings.  First Eric woke me up by stealing the comforter.  Then I had a nightmare that my dog had died.  Then I had a weird dream that a friend was getting married & charging everyone $277/person to come to the wedding.  That last was the one that actually woke me up for the day - I wanted to get up at 9, but by then it was more like 10:30.  I have a face painting gig at 1:30 I've got to get ready for, so I'll exercise tonight instead.

Lisa, I was in full slug mode too.  I've discovered that the only way to get out of it is to just do it.  One day of exercise & then the second day is easier because you don't want to waste the first day.  Etc.

I constantly struggle to find motivation to exercise. I feel like I have no time, and right now I don't think I do. My time management is just horrible. I don't even have time for jewelry, mush less boring stuff like exercise. That being said, I have been changing my eating habits and have dropped 25 pounds (!?!) since Thanksgiving. Truth be told, I'm not sure exactly what I changed that caused such a huge drop, but I'm going to keep on with it and work in some exercise where I can. Hopefully we'll be above zero here in Wisconsin again soon so maybe I can even get outdoors. I'll try to cehck back in here whenever I need a boost! Good luck all!

Three bits of advice from a fitness nut (I don't run marathons or anything 'really' crazy, but I'm pretty active and like to stay healthy).

1) Something my friends have luck with is picking local events and using those as motivation.  A 5k or a mini-tri or an organized bike ride, etc.  You just have to make sure you always keep one the list to do in the future.   ;)

2) Take a walk everyday.  The bonus here is that all you need is a comfy pair of shoes.  No icky gyms and no expensive equipment.  My motivation for daily walks is a psychotic 17-lb beastie who will eat my toes if I forget... a psychotic beastie of your own can be collected at the local animal shelter if that kind of equipment suits you.

3) My favorite exercise advice?  Ride a bike!  My husband and I took up mountain biking when we first met and I love it.  We even bought road bikes to 'stay in shape for mountain biking'.  (I will totally admit here that our yearly big vacation normally takes us to Moab Utah for a week of riding.  Yeah, okay, we're crazy.)

I worked at a bike shop for years and don't let anyone tell you that you need some fancy expensive bike.  The more you pay the less the bike weighs and that's something you can work up to.  Dust off the one in the garage, hit Craigslist, ask a friend... just make sure it's comfy to ride.  Oh, and wear a helmet pretty please.   8)

Now I want it to stop raining so I can go ride!  (It's our one concession over the years, no more nasty-weather-cold-n-wet rides)

Aimee, that was great info.

>Well I have not check in for a few days. The weather has been bad.  I did get a 2 mile walk in today, It is so beautiful out today. I even sat in the park and did a meditation. I needed that so bad.

>Well the sun is out and calling to me.

Keep up the exercise everyone, a little is better than nothing

I'd love to walk the beastie, but she's much more amenable to the crazy cold we've been having than I am.  I've also slacked a bit on exercising inside, but I've been eating much better and lost 3 lbs this week!

That's the incentive I needed to keep going.  I just needed to see it working, y'know?

I wish I could walk, I need to walk, was told 3 years ago to walk and more recently to walk on the beach in the soft sand.  Yeah right.  I can't walk on the firm sand much less the soft sand.  I so wish I could, it was beautiful out today. I did walk around the market which is less than a city block and about halfway through I had to force myself to finish just to get back to my table and that was it for me for the day, hips, knees, back are now completely out of whack.  Got to find another way, at least for now.

Thanks Monika, but I am one of those people who always refuse to give up.  I keep trying no matter the odds, so I will try again and again, just may need to try baby steps perhaps and i thought that was but maybe a bit smaller steps for a week or two and then step it up a bit.  I refuse to give up because for me to give up, the consequences are unacceptable.

Pam I found that if I do a little everyday you can build on it.

I got my husband our yesterday to walk over to his mothers house ( she is not well). He is not well either. It is about a block not real far. He had to stop a couple of times, but he made it and I think when we got back he felt better. The fresh air makes a big difference also.

It looks like it is going to be nice today and even though I have alot of computer work today I am going to get a walk in.

Take a walk and do the body some got.  ;D  My words of wisdom today. ;D

One thing I discovered for the nasty rainy days is streaming exercise video's on Netflix.   8)  I've never really been a fan of workout video's but some of the yoga/pilates combo's aren't half bad.

Well bad me. I have not been able to get any walks in for the past few days. My mother-in-law who is like a mother to me has been in the hospital with heart problems. She has had bypass surgery in the past and several stints. They found another blockage and put in another stint and she is coming home today and is doing much better. So I am playing catch up today. Maybe I can get back to my daily walks tomorrow.

Well I have found the perfect place to walk, unfortunately it usually means that I spend money or leave wanting to have spent money.  Now that Leia is working there I go more often, plus with her doing mosaics now, I go to Lowes a lot because a lady there actually breaks the clearance tiles and glass and marks it down to $1. for us.  whoo hoo.  But Home Depot and  Lowes, I find myself almost mall walking around the store sometimes.  I do go there a lot so I get in a good 15 to 30 minute walk when I do.  Works for me.

Tonight I am going out with a girlfriend for dinner and she likes to go walking around stores afterwards so that is where I will get my walk tonight.

No exercise for me today or yesterday.

Hello everyone...kinda new here, so I hope you don't me jumping in!
Starting last January, I lost around 40 pounds and now, I'm trying to take off the remaining 10 -15, plus maintain my weight loss.
Having a really hard time, though.  I've been sick a lot lately and just haven't been able to exercise, so the weight is starting to creep back on.
I'm still suffering with a horrible head cold, that leaves me extremely dizzy. (I actually fell outside today, because my balance is so off.)
Anyway, just wanted to chime in and offer my support to everyone! (I know I could certainly use some!)

Sorry you are not feeling well.  I wish I had lost 40 pounds.  I did lose about 60 a about 3 years ago, it all came back then some.  Don't try walking again as long as you are dizzy, you could suffer more damage that would keep you down longer.

BTW, jump in whenever you want wherever you want.  we all do

No exercise for me for a couple days.  I did get a walk in at the HD a couple days ago and Wally world doing my initial grocery shopping for the month.  Was going to take Jaeden for a walk today, but we were having such a good day of school that we just did not make it, then he helped me to cook dinner.

Pam I am glad you had a good day with Jaeden, Cooking with him is really good.

I went to the Y for water aerobics today that was more of a workout then I expected.  ^-^ . I walk to and from the Y and that is getting some extra in. So the plan is Water aerobics on M,W,F and Yoga on T and Th with a walk to and from. That should do something for me.

Rooting for the rest of you.

I just saw this thread.... I too am one who needs to lose about 65 pounds.... I do a yoga class each week and I feel so much better after I finish, but getting motivated to exercise the rest of the week is real hard, I have low energy and part of me hates to use up my energy on exercise, even though I know I will feel better and have more of it if I would get moving!

Monika glad you graduated fro rehab. My mother-in-law is in cardiac rehab and on friday they made her stop and rest for an hour and sent info to her doctor. They put her in the hospital today and plan a cath on thursday to see what is going on. She has ten stints and has had by pass surgery. Poor thing.

I started working at the YMCA cleaning. That is a whole new exercise. On my feet for five hours. I still go to the silver sneakers class and water classes three days a week. I walk to and from work. I dropped the Yoga for now.

I hope everyone is getting some exercise.

Hi, All. In case it hasn't occurred to anyone who's looking to count steps, there are apps for it, so you probably won't need to buy a pedometer. I can't schedule work outs, and my limitations vary by the day, but I do have 2 pieces of rehab equipment that I use when I can, a Precor Stretch Trainer, and an iJoy Ride (for core). I've used them off and on for a couple of years since I got them, and I love both. I can't do anything high impact, but do walk when I can at local parks, which I really enjoy. Stress is a big issue for me, so I started doing stretches on my balcony in the evenings (a couple of times a week), while watching/listening to the birds, and it's very relaxing, and a great way to work on diaphragmatic breathing. Good luck with your goals, everyone!

Thanks TXGulf.....

I have found that I enjoy my Water Aerobics a lot more then the Gym and decided to sign up for that. It's offered everyday for one hour per class at the Gym and includes Cardio, Stretches, etc. every day someting different.
The pool is indoor, heated and huge, about 30 in the class every day, lots of fun...

So I will be in the water exercising every day now.....LOL....must have been a fish in my other life...

Good for you Monika! Keep up the good work. I usually exercise in the afternoon after work, but it was getting challenging finding time to do so and everything else ( kids, dinner etc...) so I decided to switch to early morning, before leaving for work, and just started doing that today. I am not a morning person, so I am planning on going to bed early every night, so I can be up early to do my workouts.

Count me in too.  I just purchased a fluidity barre so I can do my Callanetics.   Early last year I was doing dance exercises in the living room shoeless and I thrashed the bottom of both feet.  Plantar fasciitis.
I finally started walking without pain last month and can go barefoot a little,  and wear normal shoes again.
I guess I have finally realized that it was I and I alone that got me here and I will be the only one to get me to where I want to be physically.  I need to respect myself and quit lying to me.  I will do it tomorrow,  I don't really feel up to it right now,  I don't have time,  I just ate,  it's too late  blah blah blah.

Why would I lie to myself that way over and over again for years and years?  Don't I love me?  Just how lazy am I?     The list goes on and on and it shouldn't.  I should be in control,  I should want and go after the very best for me.  I AM worth it.   (repeat one bazillion times)
Soooo,  no more excuses,  if one is able bodied one can make a way.  I am off to go to my exercises.
Hugs ;)

Lorraine, you sound exactly like me.  I'm actually a mix of you & Colette - not a morning person either.  I've started going to bed a bit earlier & trying to get up at 6 to exercise for half an hour.  Since that first day it didn't happen again until this morning (not at 6, at 9, but it's Saturday).  But at least I didn't totally ditch it and give up after I didn't get up the second day.  That's the tough thing - skipping a day & not totally giving up.  Y'know?

Larissa,   I know so many of us do the same thing.   I could not do exercises every day. I am a Pisces and it would bore me to tears!!!    I know that.  I have tried.  I do my routine three times a week and if I end up only doing it twice that's okay too because these exercises work the muscles so deeply.  They really want you to do it only two or three times a week.    ^-^

You are so right that we shouldn't give up.  But maybe we need something to help us along.   Has anyone tried the talking fridge thing?
You make a recording and when you open the fridge you hear yourself: You can record anything you want.
Mine would be:
Hey!  What are YOU looking for?  Did you exercise and drink your water?  Eat breakfast?   When was the last time you weighed yourself???  Hummmm???         LOL

If I had a talking fridge, I think I'd just beat it up.  It wouldn't stop me from eating.

I do want to exercise every day, though I know you're not supposed to repeat that frequently.  I vary, though.  A few days ago I did basic step.  Yesterday morning was zumba, then this morning was yoga & advanced step.  Tomorrow I'll do zumba or maybe strength training.  I think you can exercise every day as long as you mix it up.

Good for you,  Hopefully it will work to your advantage to help you reach your goals. ;)

LOL, well *wanting* to exercise every day & actually doing it are two different things, of course.  I exercised Saturday, but only *wanted* to yesterday & today.  Totally slept through my 6 a.m. alarm this morning (though apparently turned it off in my sleep), and woke up with Eric's 7 a.m. alarm, which didn't give me time.  Pffft.  Tomorrow is another day!

I prefer to exercise in the early morning, but with having to be at work at 6 and not being a morning person I have resorted to going to the gym after work which I hate.  That being said, I made it there today.  Hopefully I can keep up my motivation but I just get so darn tired by the time I've stood on my feet for 8 hours!

Weeeell, looks like I am going back to every day Water Aerobics next week. My right hip seems to have healed. It's at 9AM, course I am retired and don't have to worry about work and getting up early.

So here comes the season of wet towels and bathing suits again. You know that Glen - taking me out to eat so much, puts some weight on me too...and goes right on my "hip-pie's".....so far I am still loosing, but.....LOL

Congrats on being healed, Monika!

Kimberly, I'd love to know how a non-morning person gets TO WORK by 6 a.m.  I can barely even get up at 6.

It's called $$$ for food and to pay the rent and bills.  Great motivation... :)

LOL, true, but I still feel like roadkill in the morning.

I gave up exercising in the morning. I am just not a morning person. I exercise after I get home from work. It's just easier and more realistic for me.

Yup...and the fact that I sleepwalk through the first few hours so my day seems shorter!  :-\

So I've finally started exercising again, and found some great motivation.  Two motives, in fact.

The first was the bees.  If I want to do this full time, or even if we want to expand the apiary to 20-something hives next spring, I'm going to need to be able to do inspections on my own, which means being able to handle 90-lb deeps by myself.  Only problem is I've never had any upper body strength.

So yesterday, I just finished a 30-day upper body/arm challenge a friend found online.  We did it together.

The other motive is that as of 3 days ago when we finally bought a decent digital scale (my old analog one was crap), I'm 4 lbs *heavier* than "the heaviest I've ever been.  NOT COOL.  So today, I'm starting this crazy 90-day challenge another friend suggested:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXN66i5o8ag

A coworker/friend is going to do it with me so we can keep each other accountable.  Keep your fingers crossed that I don't kill myself!

Of course, TODAY my back decided it was a stellar day to kick up this cramp I get occasionally, smack in the middle of my spine.  Don't care, I'm starting the workout anyway.  So there, back.  So there.

Well... the digital scale is going back to Amazon, because it's crap.  Completely inconsistent.  I tried it twice in two minutes and it had a 5-lb difference!  Um... I don't think so.

So I'm back to my old analogue scale, which is just fine with me.  No decimals, but at least it can determine weight properly!

Didn't actually start that 90 day challenge, but am starting it today.  I have to - I put all the numbers to keep track in my google calendar, so if I don't start it tonight, it'll mess me up!  Ha!

In the meantime, I've been using the stationery bike and my legs are sore, which means I'm doing it right.  :)

Hope this going well for you Larissa! I just walk everyday. I try to get in at least 12,000 steps. I think after the holiday crazy stuff is done, I will start yoga again. I miss doing it and it always made me feel better.

Not so much.  I always start with the best intentions & then don't follow through.  I really need to buckle down.  A lot.

I hear ya! It's hard. The real kick in the pants for me was when the doctor told me I was pre-diabetic. DO NOT want to deal with that and really need to keep the BP under control too.

Whoa, yeah, you need to take care of yourself.  So do I, but you really do!
