Is there a way to put new messages on an RSS feed or something?  Just trying to figure out if there's a way to gently remind people to visit ;)

I'm checking into a feed now, good idea

You asked for it you got it!
Now next to each board there is a RSS symbol where you can subscribe to the feed.
Also if you go to your profile you can subscribe to email notifications so that you can watch posts and replies that you involved in.
Enjoy

Hey Deb great to see you here.
Basically a feed is a list of all the action.
If you go to the oange symbol next to each board on the main page and click on it you will see a feed or list of all the posts if you subscribe to it you can have it go to your google reader if you choose so that you can keep up with multiple feeds. You can use google reader to follow feeds from multiple places and have it all go to one place.
Just click it and try it out.

Ya know.. I think a Help! section would be awesome. Someplace where we could post 'Help! I'm stuck.' or "Help! How do you...?' You get the idea. Since I tend say 'Help!' so often and I hope I'm not alone. lol

I dont know if this is the right place to put this, but my boss on the SMF forum I admin on is a coder who does themes. If you want I could ask her to do this forum a theme.. probably for free. This is her theme website  - http://tcc.theacforum.com/index.php (http://tcc.theacforum.com/index.php). There is also a site that does free themes specifically for SMF forums - http://www.smfthemes.org/index.php?theme=42 (http://www.smfthemes.org/index.php?theme=42)

This is as good of place as any. I've looked at many custom themes and there are some pretty cool ones out there. My only problem is I'm not a coder and I've noticed many mods don't work with the themes that come with the standard package. Most of them is probably a simple fix but I'm not qualified. Anyway if your boss wants to do something that's fine It's just got to be simple or come with some sort of support. I know the theme we are using is pretty bland but it works for now. We can discuss this further I'm up to try anything new I just don't want to break something that is working and cause a whole bunch of headaches.

Have you given any thought to posting tutorials?  Especially free ones?  I know that there are alot of good ones on the web, but maybe we could at least post links to our favorites.

Just thinking out loud, wishing I could chainmaille like some people,

I have to say the 'simple' look of this forum is part of why I'm enjoying spending time here-it's easy on the eyes, without all the extra junk that usually accompanies other sites. I find it easy to navigate, post responses, and generally just look around at everything there is, without getting confused by all the usual distracting stuff you see on most sites. They say blue has a calming effect-maybe that's what keeps me coming back here!! lol :P

I say, keep it simple, keep it real! :D

Personal messages... check your personal message options and if you so choose check the box to receive email notifications and/or a pop up notification. This is under your profile. I think a lot of members aren't seeing there PM's as these options are not default.
Thanks.

Personal messages? Am I missing something?
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: chainmaille on May 04, 2009, 07:15:28 PM
At the top of the board you will see my messages you can send personal messages to any member. The main thing I was pointing out is that in your respective profiles you will see personal message options that you can manage your notifications. One thing you can turn on is a pop up window, so that when you open another screen or log on it will pop up and say you have a message. You can also turn on email notifications that way if someone sends you a PM you will get an email saying you got one and go check it.
Unfortunately the default option have these two things turned off and I know that I have sent messages to many members and they don't know thay have messages. Unless you turn on these options the only way you will know you have a message is to look up by where it says My Messages and you will see a number next too it. It's easy to miss, I missed my first one by several days. So go check your personal options. Also check while were talking about everyone should check in their profile your email and notifications settings. You can set it to your liking so that you receive emails for threads you started and are watching. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks

Just a thought-is it possible to make the navigation bar a little larger? I think the only reason people may be missing their messages, etc...is because it's very hard to see that it's even there, since it's so tiny. Especially for those of us who suffer from 'old-timer's' disease and can't see as well as we used to  :P
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: chainmaille on May 05, 2009, 06:01:18 AM
I'm sure it's possible, I'm not a coder though and I'm really don't want to start messing with the code. Then people like me start breaking things because of inexperience with code.

If you want any coding help with this forum I have someone you can contact, they work for SMF. They will make sure nothing gets 'broken' and may even be able to help with the 'spam' problem.
Title: Re: Suggestions

Thanks Haffina will discuss as the need arises. I really trying to keep the default look. Guess I'm paranoid. The spam mods that are available seem to be full of glitches when I've read up on them. Waiting for someone to create one that's not funky.

Haffina the SMF site say the 2.0 version is Beta, are you having any issues? I'd be willing to try it just not sure how to go  about upgrading with out breaking things.
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Haffina on May 07, 2009, 03:13:20 AM
Well, we havent had any major issues. Considering how much my boss likes to recode stuff, we probably should have had more problems LOL We dont, however, have any spam.
As for upgrading, if you choose to upgrade to any of the newer versions of SMF, my boss has already said she would be happy to help you. She will make sure nothing breaks. And I can say without bias that she is very good at what she does.

I have a suggestion.  I don't know if I'm just not seeing well, but I often read a post and cannot find a name of the author.  If people could just put their name at the bottom?  I don't know.  Maybe it doesn't matter to people, or if I'm missing it somehow.  I just like to know who I'm addressing.

Hey - i don't know if this has been suggested yet, but..

I'd like to suggest that rather than using the board to promote a featured member per day or week, that we could use a hash tag on twitter.

All members could seach something like #HAF and use that tag when mentioning a fellow member's work or what not.

With all the links in every one's signature, sometimes i'm not really sure what i'm reading or where it may lead to here.
(this may be because I'm a night owl/browser) but i think this is a good idea =-)

The featured members are done on the blog but tweeting them is a great idea. I tweet every featured member. The HAF Etsy Team usally uses HAFteam as a tag. Hope that helps.

Do we have say a shameless self promotion area? I typically don't post a lot of listings but sometimes I would like to post that I was featured on somebody's blog etc. and haven't been very sure where to do that. Thanks!

I think general discussion would be fine unless everyone wants a shameless plug area.

This is what I feel is an important suggestion for HAFTeam members!  Now that Twitter has Groups, I have listed HAFTeam in my short Bio on my twitter page!  I would LOVE to be able to figure-out which of my twitter friends are HAFTeam members So I could create a HAFTeam list!  I have google alerts & when you have a twitter GROUP, every post made by a member of a specific group, is picked-up by Google!  The twitter user's name AND the name of the twitter GROUP! This could be a GREAT thing for all members to gain exposure thru Google!   My twitter ID is "ArtistryJewelry"

Suzzie's got a list here http://handmadeartistsforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2095.0.html

My question is do the RSS feeds and the turning of things on and off apply only to people with shops? I do notice that I have a minimal profile I can add to. I'm planning to open a shop, but wanted to read more of what's been posted and do some posting myself first. So far, I love it! (Raedawn)

Betty buyer comes in and wants something she can't find.  It would be nice to have a thread where she could describe what she's looking for and we all could point her in the right direction, whether it was a discussion of one of us making her item or even letting her know where it already exists.

There doesn't seem to have been many requests lately; I hope that's because you all love the site as it is!  Having just joined and feeling my way round the forums, I have a request.

I've found myself reading multi-page threads this weekend and, because I'm using my iPad, the screen's not that big.  When clicking on to the next page, I'm having to 'pinch' up the screen massively so that I can hit the next page number to move long.  If I don't make the text bigger, my fat fingers hit two or three page numbers at once and I get lost!

Is it possible to have a 'next page' option, in a button or slightly larger text from the page numbers? The 'next' button on the right hand side takes you to the next thread, not the next page in this thread.

Thanks. I love the forums and I love the shop.  As soon as I replace the hard drive in my laptop, I'm going to start setting up my shop here.  :-*

The only way I know to move to the next page is with the numbers in the threads. Now I do not have any ipad, so I have never personally tried it. I guess I need to borrow an Ipad from someone to see how we can improve that. Glad you are looking to open a shop. To do that all you need to do is go to the shop and make sure you are logged in, hit the my handmade account top right> then my account on the left> then become a vendor, you can then set up your subscription if you haven't already.

I have to wait till I fix my laptop to start listing items, as I can't upload images from the iPad.  It must be a 'flash' based tool, which of course, famously and rather annoyingly, isn't supported on iOS.  I can wait.  Getting to know everyone on the forums is fun in the meantime.

I have a suggestion/request.  Could we have a separate section for sharing our latest blog posts only?  Not as part of the blog ring, and they tend to get lost in the bigger sections.  I love to read up on everyone's blog posts, but I know that I am not following everyone here.  Having a section for daily posts would just make it easier to keep up.  ;)

I hear what your asking for, just trying to figure out what would be the best way to handle it. I don't believe I want to create another section of the forum, just for that as I do not believe it will get enough use to warrant a new board. What might be the best is if we create a post under general discussion. Just like the what are doing today post, except what are you writing today, or latest members blog posts, or something like that. Looking for suggestions here....

Humbly requesting.I understand it is a sensitive issue for some so I am trying to be delicate about it. If along with resellers we also still discourage infringement, can their be some sort of extra notice of that? I know it is in small amount here but I am seeing it a bit more as in angry birds and super Mario etc.

Yes,I suppose it is hard to prove so really just an extra reminder at signup would be great. Something with specific examples so people know they can't sell what is basically merchandise without a license, perhaps mentions that fair use only applies to non commercial usage if I understand correctly.

Itis just a small concern now,I just want it to stay mostly a place for true handcrafted ideas.

Title: Re: Suggestions

thepeasantpailfull I hear you. I'm just not a copyright lawyer. We had an item earlier that was copyrighted, the owner contacted us, we messaged the vendor and had the item removed.
Now someones' handmade interpretation of an item that is copyrighted may be against our terms of use. See item below
9.      Any item that you don’t have rights to sell such as copyrighted material.(Are not allowed)
My problem is that I do not know what copyright infringement is. I do know that as it stands now, we will remove any copyrighted material when contacted by the  owner of the copyright.
It is something that I think we need some more education on. What actually counts as copyright infringement.

Larissa, do you have any experience with this?[/b]
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Larissa on May 01, 2012, 08:25:20 PM
I actually don't know anything about copyright or patent law.  The patent bar is a whole separate specialized exam.

I have done some reading, though, because I also was concerned about, for instance, vendors who use licensed fabric to make things.  I found this:  http://www.avvo.com/legal-answers/using-tradmarked-fabric-for-my-own-handcrafted-ite-449045.html

And this:  http://www.justice.gov/usao/eousa/foia_reading_room/usam/title9/crm01849.htm
http://www.justice.gov/usao/eousa/foia_reading_room/usam/title9/crm01854.htm
http://www.justice.gov/usao/eousa/foia_reading_room/usam/title9/crm01851.htm

Honestly?  Call your county bar association's lawyer referral service & tell them you need to talk to a patent/copyright lawyer.  Take the 1/2 hour consultation you get (it's like $35) and ask them.  It's better to ask than get in trouble... 'cause my gut says using Disney fabric, for instance, to make stuff to sell is a really bad idea.

I sure don't know anything about copyright law BUT I do know that I have come across fabric that will have "For Personal Use Only" on the selvage which I can respect - bad thing is when I buy a fat quarter many times there IS no selvage and you have to use common sense and maybe even err on the safe side and don't use it if there is a question in your mind.

As a face painter, I do know Disney especially WILL come after you.  Their employees and ex-employees are everywhere and are loyal.  They WILL report you and they WILL start with cease & desist letters & lawsuits.

I know face painters and party characters who have been sued.

Post by: iKnitQuiltSew on May 01, 2012, 10:16:34 PM
At one of the arts festivals which I chaired last year, there was a vendor who had whirlygigs/yard art.  These folks had purchased ready-to-paint wooden cutouts, many of which were Warner Brothers cartoon characters (road runner, tweety, bugs bunny, etc.).  They painted them by hand (making them eligible for the summer arts festival), and they were non-traditional colors.  So even though they were the recognizable shapes, they still looked different.

When I sent out my email blast this year to invite past participants to apply, their response was interesting.  Someone had seen their things at another arts and crafts show last year, and reported them to Warner Bros.  Warner Bros. sued for a share of their profits.  Even though they had paid for the licensed cutouts, that didn't give them permission to make a profit from Warner Bros. protected characters.  The folks settled and it put them completely out of business, since they are now gun shy to use anything 'manufactured' and they're not talented enough to design and cut their own shapes.

Moral of the story....  or a good rule of thumb ...  if someone else has already made a market for xxxx, it's probably not a good idea to try and make a profit from it, unless of course you have lots of money and want to pit your team of lawyers against those from Warner Bros. or some other mega-company.

Yeah, when I painted at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, one dad asked that his kid be painted as Lightning McQueen or Thomas the Tank Engine.  I refused both.

I will do superheroes, though, like Spiderman.  Marvel actually encourages use of their characters for stuff like face painting.

I do the odd fabric design on Spoonflower.com and have a notice on my profile there:
*Fabrics may be used to make products to sell.  *Artwork protected by copyright © All rights reserved

I'm happy for people to make stuff using my fabric designs, and to sell them.  They're mostly Roller Derby related and a lot of talented people make things to sell to raise funds for their Derby League.  I just don't want someone stealing my artwork and passing it off as their own, so I have the all rights reserved note.

Well,I'm glad we're mostly in agreement here, just to clarify I do understand there are already rules about it now. What I meant is would it be a lot of trouble to put some extra notice of it somewhere else with specific examples? Because half the people that do it tend to claim they didn't know it wasn't okay to basically make merchandise of the particular company or idea. No brainier to me,but then there is that thing some people don't get about a great gift does not a sales item necessarily make.

Also,on Marvel specifically,is face painting maybe different because it wears off eventually anyways? I mean I guess you could take a photo and have something permanent but maybe its different because I know all the games they make out of the characters are licensed. So I'm thinking about at least not using the exact image or logo in an item,if it's super generic or something I wouldn't really care about that.

One thing I know is some companies care mostly about the name. For example there was this lady elsewhere who sold pictures made with legos..that was fine. Sort of anyways...she got a letter that said she did not have permission to use the Lego name and it could not be visible anywhere in her photo.

It's true.  And because I've seen a few things in the HAFshop that I question, I've sent an inquiry today to the US Copyright Office via their online form.  I didn't tell them what specifically I was questioning or where to find it, but gave them some examples and asked what was OK.  We may need to tell some of our sellers to take a few things off the site.

I am glad you are doing the dirty work, more experienced at law than I am of course, plus I didn't want to have to that..I might have felt the need to be specific. I don't know if anyone is still following the craft star thread but I mentioned she already has started a gaming category. I feel that is opening up your members to getting cease and desist letters because they think it's okay. Because for example,I as well noticed angry birds is a licensed property.

Ha, that shows how much of a geek I am.  When I saw mention of a gaming category, I immediately thought stuff like D&D... and if someone makes a wizard figure or painting, it's not really copyright infringement unless they copy someone else's wizard.

But yeah, I want clarification too.  I don't do patent or copyright, and there are so many opposing viewpoints and "answers" online it's tough to fish through it all properly.

Larissa, please let us know what they say if you get an answer and your Lawyerly brain can interpret it since it never seems to make sense to me.

I know it is an issue everywhere and one we will have to deal with, but I don't want to jump on someone until I understand the absolute rules myself.

Hi, I haven't read through the thread yet, but I had a suggestion:

When browsing categories as a buyer, on whatever site, I like to set my options to show as many items at one time as possible.  Many sites give options along the lines of "show 10/25/all items" -- is that the kind of thing that could be incorporated here?  Don't know the technical side of it, but that's my shopper's preference.

I don't know about adding that into the code, and it won't be something that I would push for right away but I definitely agree with you and would like to possibly add something like this in the future.

Anything is possible, but I'll tell you why we don't have it that way. Site speed. The more you show, the slower it will be. Now saying that, would it be possible to add a button so the person viewing could change it. Sure, however we have some bigger fish to fry right now.
One thing I like about the next arrow a the bottom of the product listings on the front page is that it is fast. Depending on your internet connection it loads real quick.

Ok, just thought I'd toss that into the mix.  It can be a back-burner suggestion.  I just figured I'd share about my shopping habits while I was thinking about it.

But really, I should get to work -- browsing the forum won't make product.

Just thought I'd share one more small thing... I was just browsing through Jewelry, and had to chuckle at how many "bra"s I found there.  Or rather, bracelets whose title had been cut off.  I'm not quite sure what the solution is, and I don't think it's a dire problem... but it's a little funny to a tired person like me with a juvenile sense of humor.

That was a good suggestion, Macrina.  And I do understand the explanation for why it isn't feasible right now.

Andrew and Kim, I still really like that suggestions are always considered, and even if they can't be accomplished, or at least for the time being, you two always explain the whys and why nots behind the reasoning without blowing smoke up anyone's skirts.   I haven't read thru the thread yet, either, but hopefully will get around to it soon.

I'm pretty new here and loving it. But I do have a suggestion for the forum. I was reading a thread last week and posted a question in it, then got busy and didn't get back to it for several days. Then, I couldn't find the thread since I couldn't remember the title. So, how about a "my threads" link so we can find the threads we've posted in when we want to go back and read more?

You have a couple of options. If you go to your profile. You can turn on notifications so that you will get emails in your posts when replied too. You can also go to your profile and search you posts.

DUMMY ALERT !  I am a newbie and somewhat reluctant to post this suggestion because there's a likely obvious answer.  Oh well.....here goes......since our photo's are being featured in searches such as google, and, when someone clicks on that google image, it leads to our Handmade Artists page specifically featuring that product, and no others, "would it be 'smart' to place a 'SHOP HOME' icon, similar to the add to cart icon, in purple, above the add to cart icon?"  My thinking is that even though the "shop home" link is listed on the side bar, it is not "easy" to find, and therefore the impatient buyers will not take the time to visit our other products.  I'm thinking other product views would increase if this little change were made.

Sam that is a good point. There are several other tweaks that I think need to happen as well. Right now we are working with a graphic designer to redesign the site. We also have to work on some other things that I'm choosing not to discuss right now until I can get a grasp on the time frame needed to implement.

Anyway in a round about way we are working on things like that and more. Hopefully all will go well and not take a tremendous amount of time.

Something else for the shop wish list -
If would be great if the numbers and arrows for changing pages appeared at the top and bottom so it wouldn't be necessary to keep scrolling down.
On that note, bigger wish, control over how many items to see on a page.  I think that way the things that were added to our shops earlier on would be much more likely to be seen.  Now, it is quite time consuming to go through the pages.
Is there any way now that we can display 20 items per page in our shops instead of 12.

Here's an idea...I'm getting ready to revamp my shop and was wondering if we could get sub-catagories under our main catagories.  I know we have them on the site when I'm shopping, but I would love to have them in my shop.  I.E.  Jewelry is a section, then under that, earrings - necklaces - braclets.

Debbie, not sure if this is an answer to your question, but I do get to specify a section when I list my jewelry.  I can't be sure if there are other areas that have this.  Are you speaking specifically about jewelry, or just everything in general.

yes, I know about the sections, and I have many,  ;D  which is why I would like a drop down choice under the sections.  So instead of having 3 separate jewelry section, I would only have 1 with 3 drop downs to choose from.  Like with my fashion section, I would love a drop down separating my scarfs from my flip flops, from my hats.  Does that make it clearer? I'm finding it hard to explain what I want.  :P

We might be able to get something like that worked out.
Just so you know this is an smf forum, the software is much better than you see on other sites (not to mention names)
So we integrated smf into the site, so what gets weird is you have multiple profiles.
What I'm thinking is when we build the new version the shop that we integrate the other way.
Right now there are two pm systems, instead of one, one on the forum, and one on the shop.
The forum one is honestly better. So instead of building another pm system I'm thinking we just link back to the forum one.
Anyway better integration is our goal.

Just a grammatically correct idea:

I had my first order this morning and on the Order Details, it has Congratulation...not Congratulations...maybe you could fix that....sorry, my Mother was an English and Typing teacher and my Father a lawyer...grew up with big words and grammar corrections on a daily basis...LOL

I know my customer had a devil of a time trying to order from my site.  She was using Firefox.  She finally switched to IE and was able to get it paid for.

Also, don't know if she put in 2 separate orders or not, but I ended up with two emails, with one item per email.  The total PayPal was all in one.  Just wondering if that is common practice to send out one email per item transaction?

She also noticed that the shopping cart disappears when you're in the forums.  She was trying to find help.  Why does the cart vanish?

Ok, enough from me.

Thanks.

A suggestion: When I first signed on it says "username" I didn't know it meant, the name of your shop. When I went to change it I got this from you "Unfortunately no, your user name is yours from the start. Sorry, but this is pretty standard practice across the net."
