Work - wood and bakelite assemblage art & necklace
« on: August 24, 2013, 04:49:03 AM »
This is the first time I am listing something as art.   This piece is the most ambitious of my new wearable art/displayable jewelry line.  The background photo started with a portion of a picture of a WPA mural entitled "Strikers" that is in Coit Tower in San Francisco.  I altered the appearance ad added the background words and a lyric from the song, "Brother Can You Spare a Dime".  The pendant portion is on a large, about 4 inch tall bakelite background with vintage carved wooden laced shoes.  The other elements are  a pocket watch face and parts, vintage game pieces, vintage overall buttons, a wooden nickel and a real nickel.  The piece is held to the frame with magnets and can be worn with a chain stored on the back of the frame.

I am quite interested to hear what people think.

To me, that song is painfully about the state of things here today. We seem to be missing the songs and the public art that express it the losses to American workers and also the public outrage. When I moved more toward art it was also a move to more personal statement of my convictions. It is something that is often not popular. I am curius about whether it will sell. Making it was related to no longe writing in any sory of publuc way so making it felt meaningful to me.

I already loved your jewelry, but I also love anything that makes you sit back and think, so this is awesome..

Well, I didn't sell the piece, but it is no longer in my shop.  My 26 year old nephew actually liked it and asked if he could have it.  I was so pleased that it is now in his apartment.  That might have been better than a sale.
