Silver Filled Wire
« on: September 24, 2012, 01:32:27 PM »
I've been thinking about trying silver filled wire for some of my projects but haven't tried it yet. Has anyone here used it or know much about it? Will it hold it's shape for earwires? I'm looking at 20 gauge round, half hard. Any info would be appreciated!

I've never used it before, I have heard mixed reviews about it. Hope someone who knows can chime in.

I have never used it either, but 20 gauge half hard should definitely hold its shape I would think.  I am sure someone here will respond positively with so many jewelers at least one will have used it.  Sorry I could not help.

I have been using 10 gauge half round half hard for ring shanks.  Hammers well, solders fine also.  Can not really tell the difference with Sterling when working with it.

I use it a lot and love it!  It works just like sterling, but it is a real cost savings.  If you use a tumbler it holds up very well.  I try not to tumble more than 1 hour.  If you look at some of my bracelets they are made with the silver filled.  Make sure you buy it from a reliable source to ensure that you are getting sterling silver filled and not silver plate.  I usually order from wire-sculpture.com.
