That's good info Andrew.  I did not know that about Weebly.  I have had mine for a year.  not much success there until recently I had a couple orders, but it seemed like a good idea for a non-coding person to be able to get this done.  I don't know code so this was easy for me.  How is Wordpress, is it ok for someone like me who does not know code?

You can set up a free worpress.com account and play it is just like blogger. But what I'm talking about is a self hosted wordpress installation on your own server, which you need to get a host for. The same wordpress.com software can be downloaded on your server, the HAFblog is wordpress, IBH, chainmaillebymboi, makinthebestofit, are all self hosted wordpress sites.
It is one of the most powerful site builders you can use, there is a learning curve, but once you get used to it and understand how it works it is easy. I just helped Anne move On fire for Handmade to a self hosted wordpress platform. Her alexa rankings have dropped tremendously in a very short period of time.
The whole thing is, if you want to use a weebly type site for a splash page or a small website that you don't care much about it is fine, but if you want a website that can grow with you and take care of all your needs from now till whenever weebly sites are a waste of time. All of those type sites are a waste of time and will not get you anywhere. I had to learn the hard way, I never had a weebly site but I had a website tonight site with godaddy, and a yahoo site, with yahoo site builder, all of it was a waste of time and honestly much more work for very little results.

The only thing about a self hosted wordpress site is that you need to host it, which is not free. I would suggest my host, but the smallest package is about $35 a month. I believe Blue Highways got a cheaper deal, not sure who she is using but I know you can get server space for less, I just don't know these other companies so I will not suggest any.

Great info Andrew.
I recently remade my site and I use SquareSpace.com on the unlimited plan - $16pcm paid in advance for a year.   There is a limited plan for $8, but that really does limit your photo storage.

You do get 14 days free trial which got me hooked.  You build your site using building blocks and it has an integrated blog function, RSS and many other features.  They also have free smart phone apps so you can check and post items on the go - great for art fairs!

It is was for me a learning experience, but the help desk is fantastic and answers you well within the 2 hour window.  The SEO is good too and I get plenty of robots and shoppers all the time and you can see these with the intergrated analytics.

Anyway, it works for me!

Don't you find it rather ironic that AF was created as an alternative to Etsy. They are so much the same now you can barely tell them apart. I just find it unexceptable to treat people so badly for the sake of a dollar.

Amen Sista....
AF claims, if they dont have any customer claims, (duuuuhhhhhh) it will be used for advertising. Who's advertising, not our shops.... ???

They have changed already from "myeuropeantouch at artfire" to "artfire myeuropeantouch"  simply put....

I had an AF shop for two months.  The first month was free, so I gave it a try.  They charged $11.95 per month at the time, which might be ok if you sold a lot, but I only sold one mug during the two months I had it, not even breaking even.  After they started the insurance thing, I closed the shop.  It was expensive enough for me without yet another dollar per month in addition to them overriding my policies.  I liked some of the features they had, such as the way you could make Collections, much better than Etsy's, although I have seen Etsy copying off of them for that now.  AF seems to be going downhill, although there are still some people on it, probably mostly the ones with the lower fees.

Is it me or does this sound like Animal Farm?

LOL, yeah, very Orwellian.  For those who may not know & didn't look it up yet, the animals take over the farm from their human oppressors.  Then over time, the pigs get more & more officious, take over, start acting more & more oppressive, until they finally take over, and eventually start living in the farmhouse and standing on their hind legs.  At the end, the other animals can no longer tell the difference between their pig and human oppressors.

It's about communism.  How socialism was a good idea, but in the wrong hands anyone will use any tools to rule with an iron fist.

Anyone who knows me knows I was very pro AF for a long time. Then John Jacobs stepped back and let his side kick take the front running and things have gone down hill. Since the inplementation of their ASSurance program and stupid changes they made that caused the site to be effectively wiped from Google and force sellers to have to rebuild their links, the traffic on AF has dropped by 75%. That's right DOWN 75% in 12 months.
I have some wonderful friends on AF and I learnt a lot, but their treatment of sellers in recent times is abysmal. I'm glad I walked when I did... 3 years, 5 studios and a lot of bitterness.

It looks like the moral of the story with both AF & Etsy is that when the original creators sold out & let someone else take over, it all went to hell.  Someone who buys a business isn't going to put the same heart, soul, and thought into it as someone who builds a business.  It's not their baby; it's just a moneymaker.  So their decisions will be fueled by a different agenda.

We are already preparing for that LOL. We've told our kids that when we get too old to do it they will have to take it over. So we have 20 or 30 years to groom them.
Anyway I know you were pro artfire for a long time Haffina, I'm just glad you stuck with us, and hopefully you'll let some of your friends know about us as well. We've been a slow build over here, but honestly I think it has been the right way.

Just don't forget I have your address & live within driving distance.  Sell out on us, and Eric & I will head down, possibly swinging into the city to pick up Lisa on the way, to beat the crap out of you.

Fair warning.

Monika, I was on AF and loved it until they added the insurance malarkey. That's when I left.

Andrew, I would LOVE to have a Wordpress website. I tried, but I was so lost in trying to set it up that I finally gave up on it.  I can deal with a learning curve, but I couldn't even figure out how to get that far.
