Beginner tatting question

Hello,

I'm new here to the forum, and was wondering if there are any tatters out there?

I'm just using embroidery thread, and I have a question about winding the thread around the shuttle.  I've done several winds around the thread, but there is all this thread in a ball leftover.  The bobbin is clearly not big enough to take in all the thread I need for a larger project.  Do I have to cut the thread, or is there a way of tatting where you leave the thread in a ball and keep winding it along as you need more?  I can't find anything in the videos available and I'm tatting myself into a bit of a mess!  Any help much appreciated!
