Spam comments
« on: October 31, 2011, 06:23:36 AM »
Hiya,

I've been receiving spam comments under my posts and when I try to report them to the blog it says I don't have the permission.  Is there any way of reporting the spam? Thanks a bunch :)

We see them and delete them anyway.  Don't worry, we keep an eye on every single new member that tries to join, and we check to see if they've left comments we need to delete.

In fact, that might be why you can't report them; they might already be gone.

OK sorry, I'm confused.  I get regular e-mails from these spam commenters and when i click the report button it takes me to a page that says I have no permission but when I go to the post their comments are still there...for BMW or UGGS or whatever...

Hm, then I don't know.  The comments are gone now, right?  But as for your inability to report posts, I'm clueless.

I just went through the topics of yours I could find, and saw no spam on my end.  This is really weird.  Are you sure it's not cached?  If you're using one browser, can you come to HAF from another to see if the comments are still there?  Like if you're using Chrome, could you use IE or Firefox?

Or post the links to the threads here?

Well...I cleared my cache and tried internet explorer but unfortunately they're all still there...under my post "What are polymer canes? How are they made?" five of the seven comments are spam:( and under "Hold on don't scrap it yet!" 4 of the 8 are spam :(( If I can get to another computer I'll try that to see if maybe it's just me...very weird.

Oh!  BLOG posts!  I was searching and searching under forum posts!  Ha, ok.  Honestly, I know very little about how the blog works, and as a forum moderator I'm not sure I've got power there.  Your best bet is to PM Andrew since he doesn't seem to have noticed this discussion.

Sorry about that, we had a few slip under the radar on the blog.  There should be less problems now that we have updated the blog and are approving comments as they come in...hopefully!  If you see them, PM me and I will take care of them.

I try to keep up on them as well. I gave Larissa some permissions as well to help moderate the forum blog as far as comments go. We have a spam plugin the catches most of them. Put it this way if 8 got through 300 didn't, so it is not that bad. We deleted them, but we do literally get hundreds of spam comments a day.

And that's not even including all the spammy twerps trying to get onto the forum.  I get this strange satisfaction out of deleting them.

They seem to show up a lot in the middle of the night EST, probably because most are from other countries, and I'm a night owl.  They're probably surprised as all get out that their accounts are deleted so fast, many even while they're still online.  And Andrew, I think, nabs the early morning ones.
