Also in Black :o)
« on: May 27, 2009, 05:01:17 PM »
Since a couple of comments on my earrings said they's look good in black - I realised I had some perfect Melanite Garnets for this and thought I would make some - so here they are and freshly listed on Etsy.  I may redo the photos, not too happy with them!

Also - here are some more garnets, grossular this time!  A necklace I've also just listed.  I really enjoyed making this one!

Lucinda:

Your work is priceless...I love the necklace.  I always thought garnets were red.  What are these beads called and where did you learn to wrap like that?  Gorgeous.

They are both so beautiful.  Great work and wire wrapping.  I also thought garnets were only red.  Silly me.

Grossular or grossularite is a calcium-aluminium mineral species of the garnet group with the formula Ca3Al2(SiO4)3,[1] though the calcium may in part be replaced by ferrous iron and the aluminium by ferric iron. The name grossular is derived from the botanical name for the gooseberry, grossularia, in reference to the green garnet of this composition that is found in Siberia. Other shades include cinnamon brown (cinnamon stone variety), red, and yellow.

A highly sought after variety of gem garnet is the fine green Grossular garnet from Kenya and Tanzania called tsavorite. This garnet was discovered in the 1960s in the Tsavo area of Kenya, from which the gem takes its name.

That's not a bad thing.  I hope you aren't like me and put the info where you can find it.

Thanks (again!) for your lovely comments!  I have recently returned to jewellery after at least 18 months away, because of lots of personal issues and I feel like my skills/creativity/ability have taken a dive, so this is really encouraging and motivating  :D

Lucinda, do you take your own photos?

Yes, I do.  I think taking photos of jewellery is the bain of my life though as I seem to spend ages on the task and I am never totally happy!  I'm reasonably pleased with most that I produce though :)

Also, thanks for posting the Grossular Garnet info!  For anyone that's interested the black (Melanite) Garnets in the earrings are a kind that contain Titanium which I guess gives it the darkness and slightly metallic sheen.

Thank you Jeanne!  I learned from various books, the net, wherever I can find information really!
