Ach! I have discovered there is a deer that is eating the tops off of all my veggie plants. I would never have thought that tomato plants would hold any gastronomic appeal to any creature.
Weeds have taken over in my absence but I only had the energy to clear 3 beds before my stinkin' cold said enough for today.

Every year, just before the flowers opened, the deer used to eat the blooms on my mother's tulips.  She took to arranging blockades around them each evening.  The deer always won.

Our chickens love the tomato plants most of all, Andrea.  We have to keep them, or at least try to keep them, away from them.  This year, not so successful which wasn't a big deal as they didn't flower anyway.

I have 4 cast iron skillets that were used by my great grandmother and grandmother… talk about seasoning! LOL

Our veggies all went kaput this year.  Once we found out we had to move 9/1, we kind of lost the oomph to care for the garden.  But we're bringing the garden box to Franklin Lakes, and Eric will have to build a bunch more for all that land we'll have!

Oh, and while one stem of Eric's cascade hops is doing well, we found out why all the others were decimated.  Hop merchants!



Hundreds of them, all on the undersides of the leaves where we didn't see them, the little bastards.  So next year he's planting marigolds around the hops.  And other garden stuff.

Larissa, I have never grown hops, do they need a lot of sun?

Depends on the variety, I think.  They're Eric's babies.  They're in a really sunny spot & the cascade is doing well.  There's one variety he's got that's the toughest to grow here because they're British & are used to a different climate.
