The Supreme Court decision that requires online businesses to pay sales tax in every state/locality that collects sales tax makes me incredibly nervous. How on earth are we micro-business people supposed to deal with this?
It actually only applies to bigger businesses.
I have read that in South Dakota, the minimum for compliance is more than $100,000 and/or 200 transactions. So no, it wouldn't apply. But every state is different and I can't find anything for other states. Plus, where my house is, the sales tax is 4.9%. If I drive 4 miles, it is 6.9%. If I continue down the road another 3 miles, it is 7.2%. etc, etc.... I have learned there are somewhere between 10,000-12,000 different sales tax jurisdictions in the country.
Yes, I am hoping that all the states that charge sales taxes (I think that number is 45) all decide on a minimum threshold that I will never meet. But still, it is perplexing to those of us who actually pay attention to such things. Thanks for the speedy response, Larissa!
