Shirt Revamping Contest!!
« on: June 21, 2010, 03:35:45 PM »
Okay, everyone! Here's the difficult contest you've all been dread--errr, waiting for!! The challenge is to take any kind of pre-made shirt and revamp it, upcycle it--whatever strikes your fancy! You may use any type of shirt, be it a t-shirt, dress shirt, kid's shirt, or bikini. You may also use any type of material that will help you with your creative process. If you're not good with a needle and thread, remember, there are many ways to fuse fabric (fusible tape, fusible web, fabric glue, wires, just to name a few). Get creative!! As long as you are not going to sell your piece or wear it in public, it simply needs to hold together long enough for you to take a picture of it. ;) And do remember to take a before and after picture!

The rules are as follows:
  • Pre-made shirts ONLY! If you are handy with a sewing machine, you need to work with an existing shirt, not create a brand new one from scratch (aka, a pattern).
  • Take a before and after picture--especially if you are updating the original shirt into a nicer shirt.
  • Make whatever you'd like--shirt, pants, jewelry, lamp shade, guitar case--as long as the shirt is the main attraction. If you need extra fabric in your piece, try to use another shirt. Remember, this is supposed to be a challenge!
  • Start creating NOW! You may submit entries any time from now through August 1st August 8th!! I know a lot of you are wary of this contest ;), so you have a nice big window of time to muse and complete your projects.
  • Enter your piece by posting before and after pictures to this thread, as well as any links to information on the creation of your piece. Please post at least some kind of explanation with your piece, not just pictures.

Once all entries have been submitted, we will start a new post with all entries where you and your friends can come vote for your favourite piece!!

Now, I bet you would like to know WHY on earth you should submit your creativity to such a challenging process! The WINNER will receive $25, as well as two (2) weeks of free advertising on the forum and blog, and on Makinthebestofit.com and Chainmaillebymboi.com. Also, once the voting has begun, anyone who votes and leaves a comment will be entered to win a $25 gift certificate to the Handmade Artists Forum Shop!! All of these prizes are courtesy of our wonderful administrators!! ^-^ Finally, I will also write-up an HAF blog post about the winning piece and its creator. How's all that for incentive?

So get those creative gears spinning, and let's see your greatest shirt revamping!! ^-^ If you have any questions, feel free to post them in this thread!

great contest.

We are using part of the ad budget for the prize.  Our thought is that a contest like this is great advertisement for our amazing talent on the forum and the coupon for use in the HAFshop will get another sale for one of our vendors.  Trust me, we hashed this out for a bit and decided that it works to everyone's benefit.

hmmm, it all depends on the t-shirt.

Do we have to use the whole t-shirt, or like, just the necklines off three?

Well, you can use any part that you like, and pretty much any amount, but just remember that the shirt/shirts is/are supposed to be the main part of whatever you use it/them for. So rather than making a purse, for example, out of leather and embellishing it with the shirt, you should instead make a purse from the shirt. Do you see what I'm saying? And you could then embellish the shirt purse with leather--or anything, really!

Yeah, I'm really excited about this!  Except to replace buttons, I haven't touched needle & thread in literally YEARS, and I already know what I plan to do.
