Help developing a FAQ-what do you want to know???
« on: May 03, 2010, 02:47:21 PM »
There have been some requests for a site FAQ which I completely understand is necessary for a site as large and fast moving as this one is...so my question is what type of questions would you like to see answered?  I have a starter list of the basics, but I'm sure I am missing some.  Post them here and I will  add them to my list and get to work on it!

Funny isn't it?  I know we need a FAQ but when asked for input I end up talking to myself! :-\

I made the SEO suggestion in the other thread. What do you think?

I know, easy for me to say, since no one would be expecting me to contribute to an SEO tute in any way ...  ;D

Oh, wait, this is just supposed to be a HAF FAQ thing, right?

In that case, and in the immortal words of Emily Litella ... "Nevermind."

It seems like what people are asking for most right now is how to get started in the shop but I just read in one of the threads that there is a PDF tut for this.

There is a tutorial for the shop and most seem to get the jist of it...though there is always room for improvement.

As far as SEO goes...we can start a thread about it and those that are good with it can jump in and help out.

What the heck is 'SEO'?

Search Engine Optimization
Making your websites easier for search engines to figure out what your site is about. Using the right keywords and so on.

How about....

1.  What is a blog ring and how does it work?

2.  What is the HAF Team?  How do you join?  What is expected of you after you join?

3.  Is there a limit on how many items you can post in the gallery?

4.  Is there a limit of how many 'for sale' items you can post?

5.  What is a HAF challenge?  How do you participate?  Can anyone/everyone participate?

6.  What are the steps to post an article in the blog?

7.  How long does each blog article stay posted?

8.  Is there a limit to how many items can be in a HAF shop?

If I think of some others, I'll post again!

Keep them coming!!!  You are definitely mentioning things that I wouldn't have thought of since I have been in the thick of things since the beginning.

9.  I see "buddies" in my profile.  What is the purpose of this?  The advantages?  How do I extend a buddy invitation?  How do I accept one?

10.  I see the icons in the area above where I'm typing.  I know what most of them are, but a cheat sheet might be helpful to a whole bunch of people.

Kim, aside from the specific things mentioned in the huge "What Do You Want" topic (Andrew picks some good ones, doesn't he?) here are a couple things I'd suggest:
• I'd never heard of a Shoutbox before, would a description be appropriate (or is it just me)?
• When posting, there is a button for "Insert Image" and also the "tinypic" link. Why have two? (At first I was afraid of tinypic, I didn't have a clue what it was.) Can the message board size for tinypic be the default?
• I think these similar names cause confusion: Blog Ring & HAF Blog.
• "Crafty Creations" should probably be described as not "jewelry or needlework related"
• What's the difference between "Crafty Creations" and the "General Gallery"?
• Do the colors of the green and purple HAF Hands mean anything?
• What do the different color and number of stars under the poster's name mean?
• Within each category, when you look at the list of topics, there are two columns of icons. Could these have the kind of little descriptions that pop up when you hover your cursor on them, or some other way of describing what they mean?
• A statement at the top of the main forum (home) page, something along the lines of: Welcome to HAF. Originally the Handmade Artists Forum, now including the HAF Shop and the HAF Blog. (Because I think it's confusing to say the Handmade Artists Forum Shop. Could be that quite a bit of the confusion stems from having the word forum in the title: some think HAF means the shop, some think it means the forum.)

BTW, I think Crafted Roots had some wonderful ideas in the "What Do You Want" topic, and I believe volunteered to help with "cleaning and clarity."

Good luck!

And would you believe I've just read through the Suggestions section of Board Rules & Suggestions. Lots of the questions there could be included in your FAQ.

I was just in my profile trying to figure out how to send a private message (I got it!) and noticed I can manage my 'labels.' What labels?  What are they for?

I just joined yesterday and I am having a hard time finding my way around. Here are my questions.
1. how do I get to my home page?
2. how do I find out how many people have looked at my shop or items?

That is it for now. Will post if I have anymore. Please someone tell me the answers to these.

thank you,
Teresa
