There are all kinds of crafters in HAF, but the jewelers (and our little soaper, Larissa)  seem to post the most often ...

I made Andrew a pair of felted slippers a few Christmas's ago...knit then felt in the machine.  Boy, was that an experience and a half.  I didn't realize until I got started how BIG they have to start out...Like Ronald McDonald shoes!

I've done felting...mostly felted soaps by hand.  But, have also done some knitted felting (ipod cozies, purses).  Just haven't done it recently!  Now I'm curious, why do you ask?

Well, I am asking cause I had a few questions… Do you have to use just a felted pattern or can you use any pattern to do felting… But I think you answered my question that the slippers had to be Ronald McDonald size.  So I guess you have to use special patterns to do felting.  Also, does it have to be 100% for it to felt well or can it be a combination … wool, acrylic etc. ..
I felted a handbag and it came out pretty nice … so I wanted to try a hat …

You callin' me a loudmouth?  (It's ok if you are, 'cause I call myself that all the time!)

We would NEVER call you a loudmouth...I'm sure we could come up with much better names for you!  :-*

As far as felting goes...and I'm NO expert...I believe it does have to be 100 wool to felt or the wool will shrink and felt and whatever it is mixed with will not.  Also, I followed a pattern because I'd never done it before, but every pattern I've seen calls to knit it much larger than the final product will be.

If you experiment with a hat...keep us posted!  I'd love to see what you come up with.

http://www.ravelry.com  also has a ton of free (and for sale) patterns.  I would definitely stick to using a pattern if you are new to felting.  Once you get a feel for the different yarns and the rate at which they felt, you can more easily make your own designs.  100% wool is best, but there are actually fiber blends that will work, just read the yarn labels!  Have fun!
