how do you come up with words for your descriptions
« on: January 24, 2010, 10:12:58 AM »
Well hopefully the title summed it up, but I am looking for the tips/tricks/techniques/best words that you use when listing your items for sale.
What is your inspiration for the description?

ps,  i'm thinking of this for an article for the hafblog
THANKS!!!

I don't know about anyone else, but I have gotten so used to naming my items that I usually come up with a name while I am creating them or before I have created the item and while I am working on the item ideas pop in my head as to how to describe them.  I also try real hard to listen to music while I create and take photos.  That helps me sometimes.  Sometimes I let my husband peruse my work and he sometimes just makes a comment that sticks also.  I don't ask him for help with that tho, because when he thinks about it too hard, he can't come up with anything.  His spontaneity works well for me most times. Hope this helps you.

I'm interested in what everyone will say because I am super bad at descriptions and tags.  I can do the stats and materials, but anything interesting and I draw a blank.

I'm right there with you. When it comes to descriptions I suck. I can't think of anything interesting and I just can't talk up my own stuff.

glad it isn't just me.  When we do shows I stand back and answer questions and Andrew (and now my oldest son) stands out front and talks me up like I'm the greatest thing since glass was invented.

This is the hard part for me - generally I try to stick with a descriptive title instead of making up  a name for my items - people aren't necessarily going to google some title I thought up, but they may google "stained glass heart" -
My descriptions are probably some of the most boring around - again, I pretty much go with the facts and just try to embellish them a bit - and then again there are times I tend to get a  little off the wal with my "descriptions" - but that usually happen when I'm really bored or wondering if I will ever make another sale!  sorry, that probably doesn't help much!

Ugh, it's me too.  I also have trouble thinking of good names for things.

I tend to do both name the product and describe it a little in the title.  I read in most of my help sales that it is good to name your work.  I guess because we are trying to sell it as art and most all art has a name, to show what it was inspired by I am guessing.

Well, looks like most of us will have to read the article when you write it since most of us are not being much help here.

I was only giving my items a cutsie name at first, then I started adding words like necklace, earrings, etc., because I read an article about how a Google search "finds" you. Fancy names are nice for the customer, but if you add the more practical search terms to your titles as well, you're covering all your bases.

As far as the description end of things goes, you should see how long I sit at my computer sometimes, trying to come up with something descriptive and eye catching--you know, that perfect description that's going to actually SELL my item. In many cases, my head explodes long before I come up with it ...  :o

I have been reading that descriptions are only lagniappe(icing on the cake so to speak) but to make sure to take great photos, as a picture is worth a thousand words.  Another thing I try to do is write like I am actually speaking to some one about the item.  Hope that helps a bit.  It does not matter if the description is boring as the photos are supposed to be what sells the item.

I name my items with words that I would expect a buyer to google, then I use those same words in a description of the piece, and then the same words in my tags.
On AF, if the piece has a story I tell that in the 'inspiration box'.
I dont get all flowery with what I write, but I will put in words like beautiful or something.
In my descriptions I stick to the facts, what its made of, the size.
Example:

Title: Chainmaille Necklace and Matching Earrings in Green, Red and Purple
Description: Handmade chainmaille necklace and earrings in Anodised Aluminium rings in green, red and purple. The way the weave sits means it has a natural curve when used in a necklace.
The necklace measures approx. 38cm (15") and can be lengthened slightly if needed. It is meant to sit around the base of the neck.
The earrings are on silver plated hooks and have a drop of approx. 2cm (0.8").

Also, make sure to name all your photos with relevant names; google likes those too.
