Wood Carvings
« on: May 07, 2009, 12:53:28 PM »
I got to learn a little about wood carving this semester in my sculpture class!  We were supposed to make a four foot wood carving using power tools.  Until that class I had never worked with wood before (and likely won't again!).  I ended up making a bunch of small Celtic carvings. Four are of different Celtic knots and then I made five of the Celtic cat.  Each set of carvings is a different kind of wood. There's cherry, black walnut, maple, quarter sawn white oak, and either ash or bass wood (I can't remember which). So this is my first, and probably last, attempt at wood carvings.

Those are beautiful.  It would be a shame if you quit doing them.  Fine workmanship.

I love these!! I love celtic designs. My father's hobby was woodworking when I was growing up and I used to sit on a handmade stool in our garage and watch everything he did as he custom-made furniture, etc...for our house. He passed away when I was 12, but whenever I smell sawdust I think of him, and to this day I still enjoy watching woodworking projects/shows on PBS. If I wasn't such a clutz I would love to start working with wood myself, but as my daughter pointed out, it would be a VERY dangerous thing for me to own a power saw lol.

You definitely shouldn't quit doing it-it's quite obvious you have a knack for it  ;)

I used to see them a lot as well when I lived there.  Where abouts in Ireland do you live?

I really wish you would post some of your cutting board pictures off of your blog here.  They are incredible!

Wow, wow, wow! For a first attempt at working with wood, and trust me, carving is one of the hardest woodworking skills, you have done a marvelous job. Just imagine what you could do with a little more time and practice! Sensational!

These are wonderful. My husband would be so envious of these as he has always wanted to do wood carving.

Great carvings! You should keep it up, don't give up before giving it another shot. Looking forward to seeing more of your fine work.
