Tips on Taking Great Photos!

Taking Great Photos for your Shop!

I have found some great tips on taking Great Photos! Taking Good Pictures to display your creations is a “Tricky Business” sometimes. Getting just the right lighting and clarity is not alwasy and easy thing to do! When selling items online, you know that the quality of the photos can make the difference in your bottom line. Here are some basics to help you get your items picture-perfect!

Remember to take the Date and Time stamp off your photos.. you want them to look professional. And those of you that don’t have steady hands, use a tripod! It is a must for me… My husband made one for me using and old shop light tripod! It works Great

Personally I prefer the white backgrounds. They really show off your piece! For my very light colored items I use black or a dark grey. Remember that your item should be the main focal point of your picture! If you use a patterned background very often the piece is lost.

Props or ok too.. but remember, you don’t want the prop to overwhelm your creation! I found some good articles that are good reads on taking good photos and am sharing them with you. Also I found an easy “How To” on making a light box as well as listed some photo editing sites.

There are Five Main Things to consider:

  1. light and white balance
  2. focus
  3. background
  4. shooting
  5. editing

All about taking product photos

If you’ve got an online store, unless you’ve got someone to do it for you, you’ve got to learn how to get photos of your products into your website.

This is a four step process:

  1. Take your product photo with a digital camera,
  2. Edit the photo,
  3. Upload the photo to your website, blog, shop
  4. Confirm that the photo looks right in the website.

How to Make a Light Box

Great Step by Step “How to” on building your own light box! Lighting is so important in taking good photos! This is a very affordable way to get that perfect shot! Read More Here!

I personally find that the photos with solid backgrounds work best. You want your creation to be the stand out item and patterned backgrounds very often distract from that. Using Props is a nice effect.. but just remember you don’t want the prop to “out show” or overpower your creation!

Photo editing is tricky too.. many of the digital cameras we use come with a photo editing program –

I use Kodak with my camera and there are some free photo editing programs online too.
