Memories of Christmas Past Part 1
Every year during the Christmas holiday season, we go about decorating the outside of the house with all the wonderful lights and decorations. As I go about decorating the inside of the house, I reflect on memories of Christmas past. I open each box and begin going down memory lane and remembering the moments attached to each item.
Many of the items came from my mom, who was a master seamstress, as well as a full time crafter. She did every type of stitchery (knit, crochet, embroidery, candle wicking, cross stitch, latch hook, needlepoint); clothes; baby items; home decor; doorstops; stuffed animals; rocking horses; ornaments; you name it, she could make it. Since losing my mom to cancer, every item she has given me is very precious.
She was especially gifted at being able to look at everyday items and see what they could become. This year as I was putting up the ornaments on the Christmas tree, I was marveling at some of the ornaments she had made when I was a little girl, (yes many moons ago, in the 60’s), and I thought, “Why not share some of her creations?”
I thought it would be fun to do a series of posting this month, and highlight some of her creations. They were well made, so after almost 50 years they still look wonderful. There are some that might be easy to guess how they were made, but there are some that I thought would be fun to post and see how many people can identify the supplies that were used to create it.
As I am sure you have guessed, the first ornament is the cute little angel pictured above. Some parts are easy to identify, but there is one part that is created using an everyday leftover household item, and it would qualify as being up cycled (or as we used to call it, recycled). HINT: It is what is left after the main item is used up.
Here is a second angle to give you a different perspective. Lets see how many parts you can identify and if you can guess the up cycled item…?
I will keep an eye on the guesses and when they seem to die down, I will post a reply with the answer.

That is delightful! I too have some ornament from my childhood. In this I see a stuffed head with a stitched face, a doily, a container of some sort (the body), and felt.
What a great post! Besides the doily (which is a paper one I think) , I’ll say a ketchup bottle, yarn, ribbon, styrofoam ball, and the little thing around the neck – a coffee filter? Unfortunately I think my brother made off with all the Christmas ornaments from our childhood, I do have a few though. Most of the things we made for Christmas were gifts to relatives, a few decorations that probably disintegrated many years ago. The strings of popcorn were given to the birds!
Wonderful idea!! My guess is; that mystery item is a cardboard ‘toilet paper holder’ with felt covering it, used as the overall body of the angel! A doily for the dress, yarn for the hair, eyes, mouth and at the neck. And the head is a small styrofoam ball. How’d I do?
I think that’s exactly right, Mary!
Nice post, I think the last response nailed it.
Yes, Sewnsewsister you nailed it!! The only small thing is that the neck tie is ribbon, but not very obvious in the pictures. But other than that outstanding job!! I wasn’t sure how many people could get the empty toilet paper tube 🙂
I will dig around my stash of mementos and see what I can come up with next xx
So glad I managed that little trip down ‘crafting’ lane! Ok, so what date am I scheduled to leave for that trip to Italy for getting it right?????(smile). Mary.
That would be awesome wouldn’t it? 😉 I am very impressed that you got it so quickly. I didn’t think anyone would think in those terms. I am wondering if anything else I have would even be a challenge for you? 🙂
Great post, I spotted the TP roll when I posted it, but I figured I would give everyone else a shot. LOL
Thanks for the fun challenge,,,I enjoy anything that makes me think outside of the box! I hear that all that thinking is supposed to help ward off memory loss…maybe I just added another hour to my lifespan! Come on – get the next challenge up there, I want to try for 2 hours!

I am happy to fight memory loss. Lord knows mine is pretty shabby. I’ll work it up and submit it tonight. 🙂
I submitted part 2, it is pending and awaiting approval 🙂
