Handmade Tote Bag Tutorial

To make this quick and easy shopping bag you’ll need two 40″ x 20″ pieces of different fabric: one for the outer bag and one for the lining. Draw the pattern on a large piece of paper and cut out. Cut two pieces on fold from each fabric.

Pin pieces for the outer bag right sides together and sew along the sides and the bottom. Do the same with the two pieces for the lining.

Now cut a 4″ broad and 40″ long strip for the strap. Fold strip in half lengthwise and press. Open and press long edges ¼” to wrong side. Fold so that pressed edges meet and topstitch.

Center each end of the strap over a side seam on the right side of the outer bag: strap facing down as shown in the picture. Make sure that the strap isn’t twisted.

Put your outer bag inside the lining. The lining should be wrong side out so that the right side of the outer bag is touching the right side of the lining. Stitch around the top of the bag. Leave a 4″ opening for turning. Turn the bag inside out, push lining inside and close up the opening used for turning.
